Review: Battle Crush – A Mythological Mess in the Arena
"Battle Crush," a free-to-play game across all platforms, promises a thrilling battle royale experience with its unique blend of mythological characters and dynamic combat. However, despite being accessible without cost, the reality falls short of expectations. The game introduces players to Calixers, heroes from various myths, in a 30-player fight to be the last one standing. While the premise is intriguing, the execution is flawed.
Release date: June 27
Platforms: Steam, Google Play, Apple App Store, and Nintendo Switch
- Developer and Publisher: NCSOFT Corporation
Overview
Gameplay and Responsiveness The controls in "Battle Crush" are intended to be straightforward but end up feeling sluggish and unresponsive. This lack of responsiveness makes combat frustrating rather than exhilarating. The game's mechanics, which could have provided depth and strategy, instead contribute to a feeling of randomness and helplessness against the game's interface.
Forced Team Dynamics Without a solo option, players are forced into teams, often leading to mismatched groups where coordination is more of a dream than reality. The reliance on team dynamics without proper matchmaking makes for a chaotic and often unsatisfying gameplay experience. The overuse of dodge abilities further undermines the combat system, allowing players to escape battles rather than engage, which detracts from the intended competitive spirit of the game.
Despite being free to play, the game heavily gates character progression behind a paywall, requiring either an unreasonable amount of grind or real-money investments to access most of its content. This approach restricts player choice and discourages engagement from those unwilling or unable to invest heavily.
Aesthetic Pleasures Not Enough While the character designs and the mythological themes are visually appealing, they are not enough to save the overall experience. The game's deeper systemic issues overshadow the beautiful graphics and interesting backstories of characters like Poseidon and Medusa.
Conclusion "Battle Crush" could have been a standout title with its innovative use of mythology and character-driven gameplay. Unfortunately, it's marred by significant technical and design flaws that make it difficult to recommend. The game's potential is lost amidst frustrating gameplay, poor team dynamics, and aggressive monetization tactics. Unless significant improvements are made, "Battle Crush" is unlikely to hold the attention of the competitive gaming community for long. I plan to assess this game on the Nintendo Switch further to see if these issues persist across platforms.
