Surviving the Night: A Deep Dive into Night of the Dead By The Movie Hero
Score: 6.5
I received this game through a giveaway from Fix Gaming Channel Prime on YouTube. While I'm not affiliated with them, I wanted to give a shout-out for their awesome giveaways and raw, unedited gameplay videos, which I really appreciate. I was not compensated for this review, and these opinions are entirely my own.
- RELEASE DATE: 31 May, 2024
- DEVELOPER: Jackto Studios
- PUBLISHER: Jackto Studios
- Available on Steam
I won this game the day before its 1.0 release, giving me a unique opportunity to play it for roughly 5.5 hours in early access and another 5.5 hours in its polished final state. My playtime isn't fully accurate as part of it was spent testing on Steam Deck in offline mode, which doesn't accumulate playtime. As a result, I experienced the game in both its "Early Access" rough state and its "Polished" final state. Note that "final" here doesn't mean truly final, as the developers have planned updates for the future.
Technical Issues
Before the 1.0 update, I encountered numerous bugs:
- Main menu and pausing the game don't work with the controller; you need to use a mouse and keyboard.
- Character models glitch when selecting a new game.
- The game doesn't work on Steam Deck, not recognizing button input.
- Controller prompts inconsistently alternate between keyboard and controller instructions.
- Remapping controls doesn't save for the keyboard when closing and reopening the game.
- The tutorial is unclear, with instructions that contradict each other, such as dismantling and then repairing a workbench.
After the update, I was disappointed to see that my 4 hours of gameplay were deleted. However, the controller prompts improved, and rebinding them seemed to save. The tutorial became clearer in some parts, and UI updates helped. Some menus still require keyboard navigation, but 95% of them work with a controller now.
Gameplay
Night of the Dead is a survival crafting game where you play as a single player with an NPC helper. The NPC can be ordered around with basic commands but can also be annoying, stepping into traps and requiring healing. The game involves building housing, a farm, a fishing pond, and zombie traps. The traps are creative and fun, ranging from wood chippers to giant rotating fans. On normal difficulty, the game can be overwhelming, with up to 200 zombies spawning at once.
The crafting system is robust but managing inventory can be tedious. Vehicles work well and add an element of fun. The game rewards creativity and offers a large open world to explore.
Graphics and Sound
The graphics are good for a $30 game, supporting ultrawide and super ultrawide resolutions without stretching. The sound is basic, making it suitable for playing with background audio like audiobooks or podcasts. The game is more action-horror than immersive horror, though it can get tense when surrounded by zombies.
Conclusion
The foundations of a great game are here, and the developers seem committed to fixing issues and adding updates. In my opinion, the game is worth the $30 asking price, especially if you enjoy survival base-building and zombie games.
