Why Every Game Deserves a Good Press Kit: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Ninza

27/08/2024

Imagine trying to solve a puzzle but half the pieces are missing. That's what it feels like when I try to cover new games without proper press kits. A press kit is like a treasure box that contains all the cool stuff about a game—pictures, videos, and essential details—all neatly packed together. But not all game developers send these out.

To highlight just how crucial a well-prepared press kit is, I asked Klakmioch, the developer and publisher of the game Ninza:

"What I can say is that: A press kit is super important for indie developers to facilitate communication with the press and content creators. It's a resource that, once set up, saves everyone time. It's even useful for us developers because it allows us to create marketing content on the fly without it being a hassle."

This insight from a developer's perspective underscores the dual benefits of a press kit—it saves time for both creators and developers while ensuring the game gets the attention it deserves.

By the way, you can check out Ninza on Steam—it's releasing today, and if you're eager to try it out, the demo is already available for you to play.

Here are some images from his press kit:

The Challenge of Missing Pieces

When I set out to cover 10 new games in a single day, I hope to have complete press kits ready for each title. Unfortunately, this is often not the case. The lack of preparedness forces me to search for images online or even create content from scratch. This turns the process into a mix of detective work and artistic creation, which, while enjoyable, is incredibly time-consuming. While I don't mind doing this, saving some time would allow me to focus more on my next tasks.

My Experience: More Time, Less Fun

As an independent content creator running the Fix Gaming Channel, I handle 90% of everything myself. Unlike teams at larger outlets like IGN or Gamespot, I don't have colleagues to share the load. This means every extra minute spent searching for or creating media is a minute taken from writing, editing, and publishing. Instead of delving deep into gameplay nuances and developer insights, I often find myself juggling graphic design and video editing tasks. This not only pushes back my schedule but also limits the volume and depth of content I can produce, affecting the timeliness and insightfulness of my reviews and features.

The Ripple Effect

When I have to do all this extra work, it doesn't just delay things—it can also mean the difference between a good article or video and a great one. If I'm rushing to make up for lost time, the quality of my insights and the polish of my presentation could suffer.

A Simple Request to Game Makers

To all the brilliant minds making games: help us help you. A solid press kit doesn't need to be fancy, but it should include the following key elements to ensure your game is presented in the best light:

  • Logos for Different Backgrounds: Ensure your logo looks great on any background.
  • Key Art: High-quality images that capture the essence of your game.
  • Characters: Visuals of key characters to help bring your game's world to life.
  • Videos, Trailers with Thumbnails: Short clips that highlight what's fun and unique about your game, complete with attention-grabbing thumbnails.
  • Gifs: Quick, looping visuals that can be easily shared on social media.
  • Screenshots: High-resolution images showcasing gameplay and key moments.
  • Backgrounds: Artwork that sets the scene and tone for your game.
  • Icons: Smaller, versatile images that can be used in various contexts.
  • Factsheet: A concise summary of important details like genre, release dates, features, and other selling points.

This isn't just about making my job easier—it's about giving your game the spotlight it deserves, fast and with style.

Good press kits make a big difference. They mean more time talking about games and less time digging for info. For game developers, they're your first pitch to the world. And for me, as an independent operator, they're what let me share the best of gaming with everyone out there, quickly and with the excitement I felt when I first saw your game.
