A Steam Price Gap That Looks Strange at First
Steam pricing can look weird sometimes, and Subnautica 2 is a good example.
In one regional Steam search, Subnautica 2 appeared cheaper than both the original Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero. At first glance, that looks backwards. The newest game in the series showing below the older finished releases in price naturally makes you wonder if something is off.
The explanation is simple: Subnautica 2 is an Early Access release. Unknown Worlds announced the game at $29.99 USD for Early Access, with regional pricing depending on storefront and location. On Steam, the store page also says the price will increase after Early Access.

Why the Newer Game Can Appear Cheaper
Early Access pricing does not always work the same way as a finished release. Players are buying into the current build, future updates, and the development process before the full 1.0 version is ready.
That is why the Steam search result can look strange. Subnautica 2 is the new game, but it is still being built. The original Subnautica and Below Zero are finished products, so when they are not on sale, their standard pricing can sit higher in some regional storefront views.
This does not mean the pricing is broken. It is most likely a mix of Early Access pricing, regional pricing, and the older games sitting at their normal price. Steam prices also change often through discounts, bundles, and publisher updates, so this is a storefront snapshot rather than a permanent rule.
Check the Version Before You Buy
For players, the important part is simple: check what version you are buying. Subnautica 2 is playable now, but it is still Early Access. That can be exciting if you want to follow updates and watch the game grow, but some players may prefer waiting for the full release.
So yes, seeing Subnautica 2 appear cheaper than the older games can look odd. But once Early Access and regional pricing are part of the picture, the price gap makes more sense.
