DEEPEST FEAR – A Sci-Fi Horror Shooter Set Beneath the Ocean

Posted on December 6, 2024June 27, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl

London, UK – December 5, 2024 – Revealed during the PC Gaming Show, DEEPEST FEAR is an upcoming sci-fi horror shooter by Variable State that plunges players into a haunting underwater world. This game uniquely merges immersive sim elements with Metroidvania exploration, all wrapped in a relentless aquatic threat driven by real-time fluid simulation.

A Descent into Horror Beneath the Waves

In DEEPEST FEAR, players take on the role of Dr. Danni Carroll, navigating the deteriorating Neptune facility — a retro-futuristic structure buried under the ocean. The threat? The water itself. Monstrous entities emerge from the depths through a terrifying, system-driven fluid simulation where no area is truly safe. Every step carries risk as rooms flood, paths shift, and enemies morph out of the very environment around you.

A Blend of Genres: Immersive Sim + Metroidvania

The game boldly combines strategic puzzle-solving with deep exploration. Taking cues from classic sci-fi horror like The Abyss and The Thing, DEEPEST FEAR delivers nonlinear progression, meaningful choices, and a dynamically responsive world that changes based on your interaction with both tech and water.

Immersive Audio by BAFTA-Winning Composer

Bringing the terror to life is Lyndon Holland, BAFTA-winner and composer of Virginia. His haunting original score creates tension and dread as players traverse flooded halls and uncover the Neptune facility’s mysteries. The writing team behind Virginia and Last Stop returns to deliver another gripping narrative filled with psychological twists and sci-fi suspense.
