Dragontwin targets physics-driven dragon flight and region control in an open world

Posted on February 20, 2026February 26, 2026 By Aidan Minter

A Patreon-backed dragon RPG/strategy with a long runway — and early access already live

Dragontwin is an upcoming open-world RPG/strategy project where the core fantasy is simple: you’re a Dragontwin — a mortal soulbound to a powerful dragon — and the game is built around how you shape that bond, your character, and your path through a medieval sandbox.

If you’re into dragon-focused storytelling and the many ways games use dragons as more than just mounts, you might also like our coverage of

The project is being developed by Draconic Interactive, a small Stockholm-based studio founded by creator Gustaf Sidén (a.k.a. Sidenius), and it’s largely crowdfunded through Patreon — currently listing 27,000+ members.

In terms of vision, Dragontwin is trying to blend three big pillars into one cohesive loop: open-world exploration, RPG progression and player expression, and a strategic layer that moves beyond “ride dragon, burn village” and into territory control, diplomacy, and large-scale conflict.

  • A physics-driven dragon movement approach designed to feel weighty and alive.
  • An in-depth dragon creator plus character/armor customization for player expression.
  • Open-world regions with exploration, settlements, quests, events, and side activities.
  • “Epic battles” that involve commanding troops from your dragon, with anti-dragon threats and aerial rivals.
  • A home base concept — your lair — that upgrades from a simple hideout into a stronghold.

What’s playable right now (and what it is)

There’s no release date for the final version — the developer is clear that the finished game is still years away. But an early access build is already available for Patreon supporters, hosted via Itch, and updated over time as development continues.

Important context: this Patreon phase is framed as a way for dedicated supporters to play early and help shape development through feedback — it’s not positioned like a conventional Steam Early Access “purchase.” Access is also rolled out in batches based on Patreon tier, with intervals between tiers.

Ambition vs. reality check

Dragontwin is the kind of concept you usually see pitched by much larger teams: open-world RPG systems, strategy-layer region control, battles at huge scale, and a signature traversal fantasy built around a dragon that feels heavy, physical, and dangerous.

The studio also flags the obvious risk up front: this is a very ambitious vision, and not every planned feature is guaranteed — scope will scale based on funding and team growth. That honesty matters, and it’s also exactly why the project is fascinating to follow.
