Fresh Tracks mixes rhythm, skiing, combat and roguelite runs, with a new VR version now days away
Fresh Tracks is today’s Indie Gem of the Day as Buffalo Buffalo celebrates the game’s first year with Fresh Tracks VR, Playlist Mode and an Xbox Series X|S release on September 10.
Fresh Tracks has an indie hook that is easy to remember. You ski through the snow-covered world of Norwyn, jumping, dodging and fighting enemies while the action moves with the soundtrack.
Our recent Indie Gem picks have gone in very different directions, from the free-form shipbuilding of ShipShaper to the frightening night shift of Night Portable. Fresh Tracks stands out for doing something completely different again.
The original game launched on PC and PlayStation 5 in August 2025 and currently holds a Very Positive Steam rating, with 94% of 53 user reviews positive at the time of writing. A year later, there is a good reason to put it back on the radar.

Skiing to the beat
Fresh Tracks combines first-person skiing with rhythm-driven movement, combat and roguelite progression. Trails send you through obstacles and enemies while new abilities, weapons and Mythic companions change how later runs can play out.

Music is built into the game rather than sitting behind the action. The soundtrack includes 28 original songs, with trails becoming harder the deeper you go and bosses opening up different musical styles.
That combination gives Fresh Tracks its identity. Rhythm games and roguelites are familiar territory on their own, but putting the player on skis with weapons and enemies makes this one difficult to confuse with much else.
That kind of strange, immediately understandable hook is also what we look for when picking Indie Gems. Games such as Anomaly President reached the series from a completely different direction, but the common thread is having something that makes us stop and look twice.
Fresh Tracks VR arrives September 10
Fresh Tracks VR is scheduled to launch on SteamVR on September 10, bringing the skiing, rhythm sections, obstacles and combat into virtual reality.

Existing Steam players will not necessarily have to start over. Buffalo Buffalo says progression will automatically carry across to the VR version, although players can also use one of the game’s three save slots for a fresh start and learn the VR controls through the updated tutorial.
Buffalo Buffalo also says players who already own the standard Steam version will be able to complete the bundle containing both versions at a 50% discount.
VR can completely change how familiar game ideas feel. We recently looked at that from another angle with EmuVR, which turns retro gaming into an entire virtual bedroom rather than simply putting a game onto a virtual screen.
Playlist Mode brings something new to the original game
The anniversary update is not limited to VR. A new Playlist Mode will let players create custom five-song trails from their favorite tracks and move directly from one song into the next after completing each level.
Playlist Mode can also be combined with Scenic Mode for players who want a more relaxed run through the game’s environments and soundtrack.
The update is scheduled to arrive on Steam, PlayStation and Xbox on September 10, with the Xbox Series X|S version of Fresh Tracks also launching that day.
Why Fresh Tracks is today’s Indie Gem
Fresh Tracks is not a brand-new game, and that is part of why this feels like the right time to bring it back onto the radar.
It already has a distinctive idea and strong Steam user reception, and Buffalo Buffalo is still expanding it a year later with Playlist Mode, another console release and a dedicated VR version.
Sometimes an Indie Gem is something that has just appeared. Sometimes it is a game worth another look because there is suddenly a new reason to notice it.
That is why Fresh Tracks is today’s Indie Gem of the Day.
