Heading Out key art with car, driver, and road signs

Heading Out a Journey Fueled by Moral Choices and Americana Review on Steam Today 7 May

Posted on May 7, 2024January 16, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

Heading Out is not just about the destination; it’s about the journey itself. Inspired by the cult classic road movies of the 1970s, this immersive driving game sends players down American highways on a thrilling, emotional journey. In striking black and white, you’ll navigate the treacherous road ahead while dealing with the consequences of your choices and the chatter of radio hosts broadcasting your vigilante escapades.

About the Game

In Heading Out, you’ll start each playthrough by answering questions about your vigilante driver, setting the stage for a unique run. Your answers determine your character’s motivation, influence the radio commentary you hear, and shape the challenges and choices you’ll face.

Key Features

  • Your Adventure – What’s Your Motivation?
The dreams, fears, ambitions, and moral choices of your driver pave the road ahead, creating a unique combination of races, chases, hazards, and colorful characters with each playthrough.
  • Your Path – Will You, or Won’t You?
Each strategic decision impacts who you meet, what the radio hosts say about you, and your fuel consumption, car condition, and wanted level.
  • Your Legend – When and Where Does It End?
An eclectic Americana soundtrack backs each road trip as you expand your legend across the unpredictable western frontier.

Gameplay Insights

I’ve had a blast playing Heading Out for over 10 hours and counting, yet it still feels like I’ve just scratched the surface. Each completed mission or playthrough rewards you, continually fueling the excitement.

The police chases, traffic jams, and the wide variety of obstacles on the road are incredibly satisfying and rewarding. All the while, the slow-moving road behind you is a constant reminder that it’s game over if you’re not careful. I learned this the hard way during my last effort—caught up in the action and story, I made a few wrong choices and turns, and that was it: game over.

You can check out my gameplay video to see just how impressive the graphics are and how well the storytelling and gameplay mechanics are crafted to deliver hours of enjoyment.
