Heliocide — An Indie Space Shooter Taking Shape Through Steady Development

Posted on August 11, 2025January 23, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

Charting the Course of Heliocide’s Development

Indie developer HorrorScope is quietly building something special in the form of Heliocide, a 3D sci-fi space shooter prototype available now for free on itch.io. While still early in development, the game is steadily evolving through frequent updates and community feedback, offering a glimpse into what could become a polished, high-intensity shmup experience.

From Hangar Bay to Starfield Combat

Heliocide opens in a hangar where players can customize or upgrade their ship before heading into battle. Once launched, it’s all about precision movement and well-timed abilities. The mouse controls ship movement, the left button fires lasers, the right button deploys a shield, and the middle mouse or spacebar unleashes a devastating megabomb — which can even be detonated mid-flight for maximum effect.

Gameplay layers in tactical touches, such as breaking through laser gates when their color shifts to yellow, detonating explosive barrels to restore health, and earning extra megabombs by defeating minibosses. It’s a blend of classic arcade energy with small but clever mechanics to keep each run dynamic.

A Prototype in Motion

Though billed as a prototype, Heliocide is far from static. Developer HorrorScope pushes regular updates, with the most recent demo landing on August 9, 2025. Earlier this summer saw the addition of new graphics, an animated megaboss, and even a cockpit-view option for those who want a more immersive perspective.

Other tweaks over the past year have focused on balance changes, improved turret behavior, and refined miniboss encounters. As the developer jokes in the game’s description, there’s “just a few more years” of work ahead — but the attention to detail is already visible.

Why It’s Worth Watching

For fans of space shooters, Heliocide offers a rare opportunity to follow a project as it takes shape in real time. The devlogs show an iterative approach to design, with gameplay pacing, visuals, and combat mechanics all steadily improving. Community response so far has been encouraging, with players praising the music, visual style, and the developer’s persistence. We’ve recently covered strong indie momentum, too — see Clown Is Hungry hits 10,000 demo downloads.
