PS5 on a Super Ultrawide Is a Compromise, Not a Proper Match
If you have ever wondered whether a PS5 works on an ultrawide monitor, the honest answer is yes, but that does not mean it works well. I tested Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 using my 32:9 setup, and the result quickly showed the difference between a screen that can display the signal and a setup that actually suits it. That contrast stood out even more because I have already covered games that genuinely shine on a 32:9 super ultrawide monitor, and this was not one of those moments.
That also matters because Cyberpunk 2077 is one of those games that can look incredible on the right setup. I have even covered its wider technical reach in my article on Cyberpunk 2077 landing natively on macOS. So yes, the PS5 worked in the technical sense. I got an image, the game ran, and I could play. But if the real question is whether PS5 gaming on a 32:9 monitor looks good, my answer after testing it myself is no.

On my 32:9 monitor, the PS5 worked in the basic sense, but the result was not good. The image looked stretched and unclear, and the recording ended up in 21:9, not true 32:9, which says a lot about how limited the experience felt in practice.
That matters, because there is a big difference between “supported enough to show something” and “actually worth using.” In my case, the image looked soft, stretched, and unclear. It never felt like a proper super ultrawide experience. The recording also only came through as a standard HD upload in YouTube Studio, which made the final result look even weaker when viewed back.
What Looked Wrong in Practice
The biggest issue was not that the PS5 failed to display on the monitor. It was that the presentation felt wrong almost immediately. On a 32:9 panel, you expect width, clarity, and some sense that the image belongs on that screen. What I got instead felt closer to a normal console image forced into a super ultrawide space. That kind of stretch never flatters a setup like this.
That is also why this is not just about being picky. When you already know how good proper 32:9 gaming can look, the downgrade becomes obvious very quickly. A super ultrawide monitor can be fantastic with the right games and the right hardware. If you want another point of comparison from the PC side, my Cairn PC review also includes 32:9 gameplay and shows how much better a wider-format setup can feel when the platform and display are actually aligned.
Why PS5 and 32:9 Still Feel at Odds
Part of the problem is that PS5 is still built around standard console output formats rather than true super ultrawide use. So even though monitor support has improved over time, especially for 1440p, VRR, and higher refresh options on compatible displays, that is not the same thing as proper 21:9 or 32:9 support. On a screen this wide, that limitation becomes very easy to notice.
That is why the result can feel so compromised on a 32:9 monitor. The screen may accept the signal, but the experience still looks and feels like a console image being adapted to a display type it was not really designed around. If your main goal is a clean super ultrawide presentation, this is simply not the right fit.
Comparing It to Wider-Format Examples
To make the difference clearer, it helps to compare my PS5 result against videos that better reflect wider-format output and true super ultrawide presentation. These examples do not magically change what PS5 is doing, but they do show why the difference is so obvious once you have seen a better fit for these kinds of screens.
Example: 3840×1620
This 3840×1620 example is useful because it gives a better sense of how a wider presentation can look when it feels more naturally aligned with the image itself. It is not the same thing as simply taking a standard console-style picture and making it live on a much wider panel.
Example: 32:9 at 5120×1440
And this 32:9 example at 5120×1440 is closer to the kind of full-width result people usually imagine when they think about gaming on a super ultrawide monitor. That is exactly why the PS5 test stood out so much by comparison. The difference between “works” and “works properly” is not small here.
There Are Exceptions, but They Prove the Rule
There are signs that game-specific exceptions can exist, and that matters. But that is very different from saying PS5 is now some great super ultrawide platform. A rare exception does not change the reality most players will run into when they connect a PS5 to a 32:9 monitor and expect a clean, native-feeling result. My own test with Cyberpunk 2077 certainly did not deliver that. And if you want the bigger-picture context for where the franchise goes next, I also covered CD Projekt Red confirming the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.
Final Verdict
So, does PS5 work on an ultrawide monitor? Yes. Does it work well on a 32:9 super ultrawide monitor? Based on my own test, no. Not if you care about image quality, clarity, and a result that actually feels at home on that kind of screen.
That is the key distinction. If you already own a 32:9 monitor, you can absolutely hook up a PS5 and get an image. But if you are hoping for a proper super ultrawide console experience, this is not it. For me, the result felt more like proof of concept than a genuinely good way to play.
FAQ: PS5 and Ultrawide Monitors
Does PS5 support 32:9 monitors?
A PS5 can display on a 32:9 monitor, but that is not the same as true native 32:9 support. My own test showed that while the console worked, the end result looked compromised and far from ideal.
Does PS5 work on an ultrawide monitor?
Yes, it works in the basic sense that the monitor can show the signal. But that does not automatically mean it will look good, especially on a super ultrawide 32:9 panel.
Why did my PS5 footage look soft on a 32:9 monitor?
That softer look can come from the mismatch between the console’s normal output behavior and the wider screen, along with whatever stretching or adaptation is happening on the display side. In my case, the upload also only appeared as standard HD in YouTube Studio, which did not help.
Is PS5 good for super ultrawide gaming?
If your priority is proper super ultrawide gaming, my answer would be no. A PS5 may function on the screen, but based on this test, that is very different from saying it delivers a good super ultrawide experience.
