Cyberpunk 2077 character V with Apple logo on a yellow background, symbolizing the native macOS release

Cyberpunk 2077 Lands on macOS — Five Years Later, and It’s Finally Happening

Posted on July 16, 2025July 19, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl

The sci-fi RPG once considered “too big” for Apple’s ecosystem now runs natively on macOS

It might be the most surprising comeback of the year.

The idea that Cyberpunk 2077 would ever be playable on a Mac felt like a punchline for years — and I’ll admit, I was one of the people writing that narrative. In fact, just the other day I started working on a blog post about games that never made it to macOS. Big-budget releases that skipped Apple entirely. But this? This proves me wrong in the best way possible.

How Many Years Later?

It’s been nearly five years since Cyberpunk 2077 launched on PC and console. Since then, CD Projekt Red has pushed through one of the most dramatic redemption arcs in gaming history — and with the launch of Phantom Liberty and Patch 2.3, the game finally reached the state fans hoped for back in 2020.

And this might just be the beginning. CD Projekt Red has already confirmed a sequel is on the way — you can read more about that in our full breakdown here: Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Confirmed.

Now, on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the full Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition — including Phantom Liberty — is officially launching for macOS with full native support for Apple Silicon chips. And no, this isn’t cloud-streaming or emulation. It’s running directly on M1, M2, M3, and M4 machines via Metal, with optimized presets for each generation.

What Mac Gamers Are Actually Getting

  • Full native version of Cyberpunk 2077 with Phantom Liberty and Patch 2.3
  • Runs on M1–M4 chips using Apple’s Metal API and dynamic scaling
  • Ray tracing enabled for M3 and M4 chips
  • Cross-platform progression, HDR, and spatial audio support
  • Free version for owners on Steam, Epic, or GOG

If you’re on a base M1 with 16 GB RAM, you’re looking at 30 fps at lower resolution using MetalFX scaling. M3 Pro hits 60 fps at 1080p. And if you’ve got a monster chip like M4 Max? You’re getting high-fidelity gameplay with full bells and whistles.

A Turning Point for Apple Gaming?

This feels like more than just a cool port. It’s a moment that might finally push developers to take macOS seriously again. For years, Apple gamers were left out of the AAA space — and many still are — but Cyberpunk 2077 landing natively, with ray tracing and full parity, sets a precedent.

There’s no way I can finish that blog post I started without rewriting a chunk of it — because the landscape is shifting. What was once a “never gonna happen” title for Mac has arrived, and it’s not just running — it’s optimized.
