Bobby Prince, Composer Behind Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, Dies at 81

Bobby Prince, the composer and sound designer whose work helped define the sound of early PC shooters, has died at the age of 81.

Robert Caskin “Bobby” Prince III passed away on June 16, 2026, according to his official obituary. Prince is best known to players for his music and sound design across several landmark PC games, including Doom, Doom II, Wolfenstein 3D, Rise of the Triad, and Duke Nukem 3D.

His work gave many of the ’90s shooter classics a sound that players still remember instantly, from heavy MIDI riffs to sharp sound effects that helped shape the atmosphere of an entire era of PC gaming.

Doom co-designer John Romero paid tribute to Prince, writing: “Everyone at Romero Games is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bobby Prince. He left an incredible mark on games and on my life.”

A sound that shaped PC shooters

Prince’s music helped give early shooters a stronger identity at a time when PC game audio was still limited by the hardware of the era. Doom became known for its aggressive, heavy energy, while Duke Nukem 3D, Wolfenstein 3D, and Rise of the Triad each carried their own memorable sound.

Doom soundtrack preserved by the Library of Congress

Earlier this year, the original Doom soundtrack was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. The selection recognized the soundtrack’s cultural and historical importance, placing Prince’s work alongside recordings preserved as part of America’s recorded sound heritage.

It is a fitting recognition for music that helped define one of gaming’s most important eras. Prince’s work remains part of how players remember Doom, and part of how game music grew into something far bigger than background sound.
