Level Zero: Extraction

Release Date: August 6, 2024

Genre: Asymmetrical Horror, Extraction Shooter, PvPvE

Developer/Publisher: DOGHOWL Games / tinyBuild

Platforms: Steam (PC)

Asymmetrical Gameplay Design

Mercenaries vs. Aliens

Players can choose to play as human mercenaries or nightmarish alien creatures. Mercenaries must explore abandoned outposts, collect loot, repair systems, and manage light sources to repel alien attacks. In contrast, aliens sabotage efforts, hunt in the dark, and strike from vents and shadows using abilities like acid spit or EMP blasts.

Light as a Mechanic

Light plays a vital role. It acts as both a shield and a vulnerability, repelling alien threats while also revealing mercenary positions to other players. This risk-reward mechanic is central to both tension and tactics.

Setting and Story

The game takes place in the year 2058 on the planet Turion, following a disastrous event tied to the “New Horizons” Corporation. The dim corridors and eerie atmosphere elevate the horror, creating a setting ripe for heart-pounding confrontations.

Beta Access and Release Info

The closed beta began on March 15, 2024, offering players a chance to test the game’s mechanics ahead of its full Early Access launch on August 6, 2024.

Key Features

  • Asymmetric 3v2 PvPvE multiplayer gameplay
  • Mercenaries use light and tools like motion sensors, flamethrowers, and rifles
  • Aliens use stealth, traps, and abilities to stalk their prey
  • Dark sci-fi horror setting with immersive world-building
  • In-game voice chat for coordinated teamwork

Critique & Balance Issues

Alien Advantage

At this stage, aliens feel overpowered due to their speed and night vision. This makes the experience frustrating for new human players and can unbalance matches.

Lack of Alien Progression

Unlike human characters, aliens have limited customization or progression options, which could reduce long-term replayability unless addressed.

Performance Problems

Early builds suffer from high GPU load and occasional crashes. Optimization is needed before launch to ensure a smoother experience across systems.

Solo Play Limitations

Mercenaries playing without a full team face steep odds. Difficulty scaling and solo-friendly mechanics would improve accessibility.

Final Thoughts

Level Zero: Extraction offers an ambitious fusion of horror, teamwork, and tactical gameplay in a high-stakes setting. While it shows immense promise, especially with its light-based mechanics and tense atmosphere, balancing, performance improvements, and more robust progression systems will be essential to its long-term success.
