Three 2024 PS5 Releases Worth Revisiting

The PlayStation 5 had a strong run of releases in early 2024, with action, horror, and emotional storytelling landing close together across the first half of the year.

This older article has been cleaned up from its original pre-order format and updated as an archive-style look at Rise of the Ronin, Alone in the Dark, and Tales of Kenzera: ZAU.

Rise of the Ronin puts players in the role of a masterless samurai during Japan’s Bakumatsu period, a time of political unrest, foreign influence, and major social change.

Developed by Team NINJA and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the game blends open-world exploration, action-focused combat, player choice, and a historical setting shaped by shifting alliances.

Combat lets players use traditional close-range weapons and period firearms, giving the journey a different rhythm from many other samurai-focused action games.

Platform: PlayStation 5

Alone in the Dark

Alone in the Dark returned in 2024 as a modern reimagining of the classic survival horror series, taking players back to Derceto Manor for a story built around mystery, psychological horror, and Southern Gothic atmosphere.

Players can experience the story as either Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood, with each character offering a different perspective on the events inside the manor.

With its 1920s setting, puzzle-driven structure, and focus on tension, Alone in the Dark aimed to bring one of horror gaming’s oldest names back to modern platforms.

Release: March 20, 2024
Developer: Pieces Interactive
Publisher: THQ Nordic
Platform: PlayStation 5

Tales of Kenzera: ZAU

Tales of Kenzera: ZAU brought a more personal and emotional tone to the PS5 lineup, following Zau, a young shaman who journeys through a mystical world while trying to bring his father back from death.

Developed by Surgent Studios and published by EA Originals / Electronic Arts, the game draws inspiration from Bantu mythology and combines metroidvania-style exploration with rhythmic combat, spiritual themes, and a story about grief, love, and healing.

Its mix of movement, combat, and emotional storytelling gave it a distinct place among 2024’s action-adventure releases.

Release: April 23, 2024
Developer: Surgent Studios
Publisher: EA Originals / Electronic Arts
Platform: PlayStation 5

A Varied Moment for PS5 Players

Looking back, these three games show how varied the PS5 release calendar was in early 2024. Rise of the Ronin offered open-world samurai action, Alone in the Dark returned to survival horror roots, and Tales of Kenzera: ZAU delivered a mythology-inspired adventure with a personal story at its heart.

Availability, pricing, editions, and regional language support can vary by country and platform store, so players should check the official store pages before purchasing.
