A dark sci-fi ARPG roguelite built around loot, implants, and a modifiable mech suit
Temple of Eternal Suffering first caught our eye on Bluesky, and it has to be said that the blossoming indie dev community there is a great fishing ground for new and innovative indie games to discover.
What drew our attention to Temple of Eternal Suffering is that the game isn’t just combining familiar genres. It is blending several strong systems into one identity.
Often, the challenge faced by many developers in the ARPG and roguelite space is creating something that feels familiar, but still stands out on its own. It is this concept that developer Heavy Shield Games has looked to master.

Many roguelites focus on run-to-run randomness, just as many ARPGs focus on permanent loot progression. Temple of Eternal Suffering appears to deliberately merge both. It builds into permanent-style systems such as gear optimization, item transfers, and crafting resources, while also adopting familiar run-based systems such as temporary upgrades, random dungeon layouts, and floor events.
In addition to that, instead of generic spells or passives, skills are framed as character implants. It is a grimdark sci-fi evolution that brings corrupted technology and body modification directly into the game’s brutal science-fiction identity.

Temple of Eternal Suffering shows off its mech combat, boss encounters, and grim sci-fi dungeon setting.

Temple of Eternal Suffering blends dark sci-fi atmosphere with ARPG combat and roguelite dungeon action.
This is further emphasised by the fact that armour, weapons, and the mech suit visually evolve through progression. That kind of transformation is not always followed in traditional roguelites, and here it helps build out the sci-fi fantasy that gives Temple of Eternal Suffering a stronger visual edge.
Perhaps its most unique feature is that the mech suit is more than just a power-up. Here, it takes on a whole new meaning, adding a multi-layered build depth that combines stat-based upgrades, different weapon attachments, visual customization, and alternate attack abilities. It almost makes the mech feel like a second character layer of its own.
Coupled with the fact that Temple of Eternal Suffering is built around the concept of “the only way out is deeper,” this dials up the player challenge. Going deeper will provide more answers, but also stronger enemies. That oppressive, mystery-driven atmosphere fits the title and grimdark sci-fi tone well.
