A Goat-Riding, Turnip-Tossing Rebellion in 17th-Century Norway

Posted on August 14, 2025January 23, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

A satirical mash-up of tower defense, roguelite chaos, and goat-powered combat from a Norwegian/Swedish indie band-turned-dev team.

No Tithe for Olaf is a humorous single-player tower defense roguelite from Norwegian/Swedish indie team Ancient Well Entertainment — who also double as a band. Blending eccentric towers, goat-mounted mayhem, and satirical storytelling, the game puts players at the heart of a rural revolt against the King’s tax collectors in 17th-century Norway. Set to release in 2026, it promises both strategy and slapstick in equal measure.

No Tithe for Olaf

Release Date: 2026

Genre: Indie, Strategy

Developer/Publisher: Ancient Well Entertainment

Platforms: PC (Steam)

About This Game

You’re a worn-down farmer who’s had enough of the King’s greedy taxmen. When royal bailiffs confiscate your pickled turnips and aged lamb legs, you rally the valley’s farmers into open rebellion. Build bizarre towers, charge enemies on your semi-trusty goat, and defend your land across procedurally generated missions where strategy, resource management, and third-person action meet.

“When we started this project we wanted to challenge ourselves to make a small, but highly replayable game that still really captured our love of Nordic history and culture. It’s not our first attempt at making a game. We’ve built a few prototypes that sank into the swamp, so to speak. But thankfully, this one stayed up!” stated Chris, from Ancient Well Entertainment. He continued, “It’s been amazing to work together with truly lifelong friends on a game that lets us take the skills we learned while playing in a folk rock band together and try to apply it to the alchemy of making indie games. We really tried to build with gameplay in focus, but still sneak in as much flavor from Nordic history and culture as we could. We’re frankly stoked to see how people react to it!”

Protect the Winter Stores – Tower Defense

Each fall, the King’s tax campaign sweeps through the valley. Build eccentric towers to intoxicate, humiliate, or force out his agents before they escape with your food stores — or face a long, hungry winter.

Goat-Riding Rebel – Third-Person Action

Ram foes, pelt them with vegetables, and lure them into traps. If you lose the turnips, your cousins lose their farm.

Plotting rebellion

Fuel the Fight – Resource Management

Harvest crops, upgrade your farm, and fund your defenses between waves. Neglect production, and the bailiffs will make off with your best goods.

Farmer’s Wit – Persistent Upgrades

Unlock wild new tools after each victory — from weaponized manure to ballistic onions — and keep escalating your guerrilla warfare.

Rebel Again and Again – Procedural Replayability

Every rebellion plays differently thanks to procedurally generated farms and modifiers. Can you push the King’s goons out for good?

No Tithe for Olaf mixes action, satire, and strategy into a goat-charging battle against 17th-century taxation.
