“Avowed” takes players deep into the mystical Living Lands of Eora—a rich and perilous world shaped by magic, ambition, and ancient lore. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the game sets out to build on the studio’s legacy of storytelling and player agency. As someone with decades of gaming experience and a super ultrawide monitor ready for adventure, I entered with high expectations. What I found was a mix of awe and hesitation.
Visuals That Pull You In
The first thing that struck me was the stunning landscape design. On a 5120×1440 resolution, the game world unfolds with breathtaking beauty. Obsidian clearly paid attention to visual composition, with panoramic scenes that genuinely feel cinematic. However, even with powerful hardware like the RX 7900XTX, ray tracing proved to be too taxing. I had to settle for high settings without upscaling to maintain stable performance.
Performance and Optimization
Avowed feels visually tuned for consoles first, PC second. Crashes at startup, framerate dips, and ray tracing issues required early compromises. Disabling some effects and adjusting settings helped, but the optimization isn’t quite where it should be—especially at this price point. Gamers running high-end PCs may find themselves surprised by the lack of polish.
Combat, Choices, and Comparisons
The gameplay delivers a familiar but refined RPG rhythm—swinging swords, hurling spells, and navigating a world of political tension and personal stakes. While some mechanics draw clear inspiration from “Skyrim,” Avowed incorporates Obsidian’s signature storytelling through reactive dialogue and branching quests. There’s room for creativity, but not much innovation on the core mechanics front.
Sound Design and Atmosphere
The audio experience is subtle but effective. Environmental cues, haunting scores, and ambient sound design all add to the immersion. Voice acting is serviceable—functional enough to carry the story but rarely memorable. Dialogue-heavy moments are common, which will appeal to narrative-driven players but might bog down those seeking fast-paced action.
Price vs. Value
This is where things get tricky. At nearly $80, Avowed doesn’t quite justify its premium label. It’s a good RPG. Maybe even a very good one. But not exceptional enough to warrant full price unless you’re a die-hard fan of the genre or Obsidian’s past titles. Waiting for a discount—perhaps 30 to 50 percent off—would feel like a more reasonable deal for most players.

Final Thoughts
Avowed showcases what Obsidian does best: deep lore, a reactive world, and a sense of place. But it also highlights some of the studio’s growing pains as it stretches toward AAA status under Xbox’s banner. The game is worth playing, but it’s not without flaws. If you’re okay with waiting for patches or discounts, Avowed could be a rewarding ride through the Living Lands. But for now, it’s a cautious recommendation.
