10 indie reveals from Gamescom 2026 that deserve a place on your radar
From PixelJunk Monsters 3 and Greak 2 to talking frogs, breakup horror and a giant skull, these were our favorite indie reveals from Gamescom week.
Gamescom 2026 brought hundreds of games to Cologne, but this list is about the new independent projects that caught our attention. We are focusing on genuine announcements and world premieres from Gamescom week, rather than games that were simply playable on the show floor.
We have not played every game below, so this is not a review ranking. It is our pick of ten reveals worth watching after the event.
We also tracked the wider week around the show, including the three Future Games Show broadcasts announced for Gamescom 2026, where several new projects were put in front of a much wider audience.

10. Wolcen 2
Wolcen 2 was one of the larger independent surprises from the Future Games Show at Gamescom.
Wolcen Studio is returning to dark fantasy action RPG territory with weapon-driven abilities, Shadow Form powers and support for solo or co-op play. PC Early Access is planned for 2027.
The first Wolcen had a difficult history, so the sequel has something to prove. A fresh start makes this one worth watching.
9. Amphibian
Amphibian immediately stood out because there simply are not many serious RPGs centered on a country of talking frogs fighting an invading army of toads.
JARCORP Interactive’s hand-drawn Super2D RPG follows Sapo and his allies as drought, starvation and war threaten their homeland. Its tactical adventure structure is aimed at fans of classic console RPGs, with release planned for 2028.

8. Sweetheart
Sweetheart describes itself as a dating, breakup and existential-crisis simulator, which is already a memorable setup for a horror game.
Developed by Genie Boy Games, it follows the collapse of a 15-year relationship between Gabe and his childhood sweetheart, celebrity pop star Skylar Maxine. Their Hollywood home becomes part of a surreal nightmare as the relationship falls apart.

Sweetheart is planned for 2027.
7. Kingdom III: Rising Realms
Kingdom III: Rising Realms brings Raw Fury’s Kingdom series back with another mixture of side-scrolling exploration, building, micro-strategy and tower defense.
The realm has been shattered, the Greed have a new ruler, and players will rebuild across procedurally generated islands while recruiting subjects, Elite units and mythical allies.

Kingdom III: Rising Realms is planned for 2027 on PC and consoles.
6. Last Ditch Effort
Last Ditch Effort is a grimdark pixel-art character-action game from Moonwell Games, and its visual direction made it one of the easiest reveals to remember.
You play as Igor Emmerich in a world consumed by endless war, with fast combat, handcrafted animation and comic-book storytelling. It is planned for PC in 2027.
5. Bye Bye Bonnie
Bye Bye Bonnie might have the strangest pitch on this list: up to four players travel across a toy-punk wasteland using a giant talking skull as part vehicle, part puzzle tool and part enormous golf ball.
Brainwash Gang and Raw Fury are building the game around coordinated physics challenges, platforming and dungeons, with players working together to influence the skull’s next launch.

There is no confirmed release date yet, but a four-player game about launching a talking skull through a wasteland is difficult to forget.
4. Prospera
Prospera comes from German independent developer Active Fungus Studios, making it particularly appropriate for a Gamescom list.
It combines city building, automation and management with first- and third-person exploration. You can build industry and railways, manage workers, then physically walk through the Victorian-inspired city you created.
Prospera received its world premiere during Gamescom week and is targeting Q2 2027.
Events like Gamescom remain important for smaller teams trying to stand beside much larger productions. We looked at that more closely in why Gamescom remains such an important stage for indie developers.
3. Alkimya: House of Wisdom
Alkimya: House of Wisdom has one of the most unusual settings among this year’s Gamescom reveals.
Iksyr’s first-person survival horror game takes place inside Baghdad’s House of Wisdom during the 1258 siege of Baghdad. Players scavenge, solve puzzles and use alchemy while dealing with invading forces and a supernatural threat.
Historical Baghdad alone gives Alkimya a very different identity from the usual abandoned laboratory or haunted building.
2. Greak 2: Alliance of the Storms
Greak 2: Alliance of the Storms brings back the hand-drawn world of Greak with co-op much more deeply integrated into the adventure.
Greak and Adara are separated across parallel dimensions, giving each character different paths, objects and enemies. The game can be played solo or through local and online two-player co-op.

Greak 2 is planned for 2027 on PC and consoles.
1. PixelJunk Monsters 3
PixelJunk Monsters 3 is our top indie reveal from Gamescom 2026.
Q-Games is bringing the series back to its hand-drawn roots in 4K, with the familiar active tower-defense structure joined by roguelike systems, new enemies and additional towers.
Players still move around the battlefield themselves to build and improve defenses, with solo play and two-player local or online co-op supported.

Q-Games is also running a 120-hour PC playtest for members of its Discord server from September 4 to September 9, 2026, giving players an immediate chance to see where the sequel is heading.
The combination of recognizable tower defense, restored hand-drawn presentation and meaningful new systems puts PixelJunk Monsters 3 at the top of our Gamescom indie list.
More than the biggest booths
Gamescom works because something strange and unexpected can appear during the same week as games backed by enormous teams and budgets.
The week also stretched beyond the main halls. Pixel Arcadia added another showcase for retro and retro-inspired projects just ahead of Gamescom, reinforcing how crowded the discovery window has become for smaller games.
This year’s indie reveals gave us Baghdad-set survival horror, talking frogs, a first-person German city builder, co-op Metroidvania puzzles and four players launching a giant skull across a wasteland. That is a good enough reason to keep watching the smaller announcements.
Our recent Indie Gem of the Day spotlight on ShipShaper is another example of the kind of smaller project we want to keep following alongside the major releases.
