Bullets & Brains – Demo Review

Posted on June 13, 2025January 23, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

A fast, stylish twin-stick shooter that mixes bullet-hell chaos with clean controls and co-op potential

There’s something immediately satisfying about Bullets & Brains. The game wastes no time throwing you into action, but it also gives you just enough breathing room to enjoy the movement, map layout, and subtle flair of its art style. It’s still in demo form, but what’s already here shows promise — especially if the co-op mode delivers.

What Stood Out in the Demo

  • Movement & Controls: Clean and intuitive. Dashing feels right, and nothing gets in your way.
  • World Bosses: They act like standalone bullet-hells. You can face them or flee — and that freedom adds a lot of tension.
  • Auto Reloading: Honestly a game-saver. Stopping to reload while being swarmed would’ve killed the pace.
  • Upgrades: I only saw a few in this demo, but there’s potential here for a fun, evolving build system.

Visuals & Audio

There’s a retro-Dreamcast feel to the cel-shaded art — clean, colorful, and striking without going overboard. The game ran smoothly, but the 60 FPS lock caused some screen tearing on my setup. A V-sync option would be a welcome addition in the full release.

The sound design is sharp, especially for positional awareness. You can tell where danger’s coming from, which matters when bullets are flying from every direction. That said, the effects could use more variety to avoid repetition during longer sessions.

Story & Characters

The story does what it needs to — gives you a reason to shoot stuff. It’s not deep, but it works. Characters aren’t particularly memorable, but they’re distinct enough in design that you can tell them apart during gameplay, and the simplicity fits the visual style.

Co-op Potential

The co-op mode might end up being the highlight. Right now, all we’ve seen is a single screenshot. Even a short gameplay clip on the Steam page could help sell the concept — because if it plays as well as the core demo, it could become a staple for indie co-op fans.

Final Verdict

Bullets & Brains is a stylish, smooth twin-stick shooter that already gets a lot right. It’s fast, focused, and doesn’t waste your time. The foundation is solid — and with more upgrades, expanded co-op, and a few quality-of-life tweaks (like V-sync), this could easily become a standout indie shooter.

Solo, it’s a fun pick-up-and-play experience. With a friend, I can see this becoming something you return to regularly just to clear the map together and chase boss takedowns.
