Day-one modding lets players reshape Frostland with FrostKit
Warsaw, Poland – August 28, 2024 – In an exciting update following this Monday’s eye-catching dinosaur-themed teaser, 11 bit studios has announced that Frostpunk 2 will feature full mod support from launch. Their new tool, FrostKit, powers this significant enhancement, transforming how players engage with the game.
The original Frostpunk, first released in 2018, captured the imaginations of strategy and survival enthusiasts with its demanding, climate-based city-building gameplay. While it was praised for its depth and harsh moral choices, the community repeatedly requested more flexibility and customization. With Frostpunk 2’s move to Unreal Engine, those requests are finally being answered with far broader support for modifications.

Technical Advances with Unreal Engine
Szymon Jablonski, Technical Director of Frostpunk 2, highlighted the advantages of shifting to Unreal Engine: “Thanks to the switch to Unreal Engine, things are totally different now.” The move not only improves visuals and performance but also opens the door to deeper modding support.
Compared to the original game’s custom technology, Unreal gives the team a more flexible foundation. Systems can be exposed more cleanly, tools can be built directly on top of the engine, and modders benefit from workflows that are already familiar to many creators.
What FrostKit Offers
FrostKit will let players create their own maps and scenarios, then populate them with custom models. That means you are no longer limited to the bleak, industrial look of New London. You can build cities inspired by ancient civilizations, distant cosmic outposts, or entirely new worlds far removed from Frostpunk’s traditional frosty apocalypse.
A collaborative effort with mod.io underpins the sharing side of things. The new FrostKit trailer shows off the range of potential modifications, from reimagined landscapes to experimental setups that push the boundaries of what Frostpunk 2 can be.
Beta Testing and Community Feedback
FrostKit will initially be available in beta. Jablonski explains that creators will gain access to most of the tool’s core functions from the start, but these features will be iteratively upgraded based on community feedback.
The development team is beginning with a closed beta focused on select members of the modding community. Their feedback will help polish FrostKit’s workflows, performance, and stability before it rolls out more widely. The goal is a toolset that works just as well for small tweaks as it does for ambitious total conversions.
Launch Details and Extra Content
Frostpunk 2 is scheduled to launch on PC on September 20, with immediate availability on PC Game Pass. A console release will follow. Fans wanting an earlier start can grab the Digital Deluxe Edition, which offers early access beginning September 17.
The Digital Deluxe package also includes three upcoming DLCs, an exclusive in-game item, and additional special content, making it the go-to option for players planning to invest heavily in Frostpunk 2’s long-term future.
Why Day-One Mod Support Matters
Frostpunk has always been about tough choices, unforgiving weather, and the struggle to keep a fragile society alive. With the introduction of FrostKit, Frostpunk 2 is set to become not just a sequel, but a platform for community-driven stories and experiments.
From alternative histories and challenge scenarios to completely new biomes, the community now has the tools to redefine what “survival” looks like in Frostland. Combined with ongoing updates and DLC, Frostpunk 2 is poised to offer a richer and more customizable experience than ever before.
