Lies of P Overture DLC – dark fantasy combat and puppet hero

Rediscovering Lies of P: A Dark Fantasy That Redefined the Soulslike Genre

Posted on April 18, 2025November 1, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl

A haunting return to Krat through the acclaimed Overture DLC and deeper combat systems

When Lies of P launched in September 2023, it brought a fresh twist to the Soulslike formula. Drawing inspiration from the tale of Pinocchio, the game immersed players in a dark, Belle Époque-inspired world filled with puppets, plague, and despair. Now, with the release of the Overture DLC, it’s the perfect time to look back on how this title became a standout entry in the genre—and why it still matters today.

Why It Stood Out in 2023

While comparisons to Bloodborne were inevitable, Lies of P carved its own identity through a unique atmosphere and satisfying mechanics. The grim, steampunk-esque city of Krat gave players a sense of constant tension. Weapon fusion, Legion Arms, and the tight dodge-parry system created layered combat that felt rewarding to master. Even without FromSoftware’s signature touch, it earned respect for its polish and originality.

The Story of a Puppet with a Soul

Set in a world where puppets have rebelled, players control P—an artificial boy searching for his creator while battling monstrous automatons and inner corruption. The story blends classical literature with grim storytelling, allowing players to shape P’s humanity through decisions. It’s a Soulslike with moral consequence and surprising emotional weight.

Overture DLC: A Chilling Return

Released in June 2025, the Overture DLC acts as a prequel chapter to the main game. It introduces haunting new locales like a snow-covered port, corrupted zoo, and abandoned asylum—all drenched in thick atmosphere. Bosses like Markiona, the Puppeteer of Death, have already earned praise for their design and challenge. PC Gamer even called it “one of the best DLCs in the genre.”

A Game That Grows With You

Recent updates (v1.9.0.0 and beyond) brought improved localization, balance fixes, and new game modes, including the brutal Death March. Whether you’re returning after a long break or experiencing it for the first time, Lies of P now feels tighter, deeper, and more complete.

Final Thoughts

Lies of P has become more than just a Soulslike clone—it’s a defining entry in the genre. With a second game and possible expansions teased, the legacy of Krat and its puppet nightmare is far from over. If you haven’t played it, now is the time. And if you have, the Overture DLC offers a gripping new reason to return.
