Steam Antitrust Lawsuit Moves Forward Over Valve Commission Claims
A long-running antitrust lawsuit against Valve remains active, with plaintiffs challenging Steam’s commission structure and alleged pricing rules.
The antitrust lawsuit against Valve, the company behind Steam, is moving closer to a possible jury trial after a federal judge reportedly declined to end the case at the summary-judgment stage.
The case, known as In re Valve Antitrust Litigation, focuses on claims that Valve used Steam’s position in PC game distribution to maintain commissions of up to 30% while limiting how developers and publishers could price their games on competing platforms.
Plaintiffs allege that Steam’s pricing rules made it harder for rival storefronts to compete on price. The developer and publisher class has been reported at roughly 32,000 PC game companies, although class certification is not a finding that Valve violated antitrust law.
Valve denies wrongdoing. No court has ruled that the company broke the law, and the lawsuit remains about allegations that still need to be tested through the legal process.
What This Could Change
For developers, especially smaller studios, platform fees and pricing rules can shape how much revenue stays with the studio after each sale. A lower-fee storefront only becomes a strong alternative if developers can use that lower fee in ways players can see, such as lower prices or stronger discounts.
If plaintiffs win, the outcome could put pressure on how PC game storefronts handle commission rates, cross-store pricing, and developer control over discounts. If Valve wins, Steam’s current business model would likely remain largely intact.
For now, the key point is simple: this is not a final ruling against Valve. It is an active legal challenge that could become one of the most important storefront cases in PC gaming.
