New Steam devlog focuses on core loop, infection spread, dungeons, and breakable gear
Blight: Survival, the medieval-set PvE survival game developed by Haenir Studio and published by Behaviour Interactive, recently revealed the latest insights into development with its newest devlog on Steam.
Since its dramatic and much-talked-about debut back in November 2022, Blight: Survival made a huge impact with gamers and announced an incredible 650,000 wishlists in March 2023. However, this momentum began to decrease when Haenir went quiet on roadmap details and launch timing, which caused many to lose confidence in the game and raise concerns about Discord activity. In its latest devlog on Steam, the team says it has been hard at work on the core gameplay loop before it embarks on deeper mechanics such as progression, and it has also revealed new art and visual concepts it’s working on.

What the devlog shows
By the looks of it, Haenir is still experimenting with how the infection—on which Blight: Survival is set—affects the environment, creeping and consuming all it touches. While its debut gameplay footage showed a medieval knight exploring and encountering various infected foes in the open world, the developer has revealed that dungeon exploration will be possible as well, creating a claustrophobic environment that will surely cause players to adjust their combat strategy. Breakable objects and degradable weapons also add to the medieval setting, adding a layer of authenticity to the game.
Editorial take
I was really impressed with Blight: Survival’s gameplay reveal trailer—visually it’s incredible—but with so much hype and expectation now demanded of it, the game really has to deliver. This November will mark three years since its debut gameplay, and it’s unusual that only now the core gameplay loop is being ironed out. I can appreciate cautious pacing given the current climate in games; dedicating the right kind of resources to essential mechanics—getting the look and feel right—is essential for success. But I’m also wondering if Blight: Survival was a little too hasty with its gameplay reveal when it didn’t really have a content plan before it found publisher support.

Blight: Survival has a huge amount of potential—on one hand, it’s bringing a wonderfully detailed and macabre medieval setting, one we’ve not seen so beautifully rendered since Assassin’s Creed. On the other hand, it appears to still be figuring out that it needs substance—that it needs the content and structure to really offer up a compelling game with progressive mechanics and plenty to explore and engage with.
Blight: Survival cannot afford to fall on its own sword. After all, it looks amazing in what it’s revealed so far, and it needs to hold course—but I have high hopes that if it increases the level of engagement with its audience to rebuild confidence, it will get the success it deserves.
