1939 Birmingham, gangsters, and one widow out for revenge
Cohen 1939 is Fix Gaming Channel’s Game of the Week #72, selected as an editorial spotlight ahead of its September 30, 2026 Steam release.
We have not played the finished game. This is not a hands-on review or recommendation based on our own gameplay. It is a Game of the Week spotlight based on the game’s concept, public footage, current Steam information, and available demo.
Following Shroom and Gloom, our Game of the Week #71, this week’s pick trades mushrooms and cards for rain-soaked streets, organized crime, and a very direct revenge story.

A revenge story in Birmingham
Cohen 1939 follows Elisa, whose husband Richard has been betrayed and killed inside Birmingham’s criminal underworld. She takes up arms and goes after the people responsible.
Developer Cube of Cube describes the game as being inspired by the criminal atmosphere of Peaky Blinders and the fast, brutal violence of Hotline Miami. That comparison tells you quickly what kind of game this wants to be: stylish gangster fiction built around aggressive top-down action.
Fast top-down combat
The basic combat pitch is straightforward. Move quickly, use firearms and melee weapons, read enemy positions, and survive rooms where a bad decision can end the fight quickly.
Steam lists Cohen 1939 as an action-adventure indie game, while the demo is tagged around top-down shooting, twin-stick action, crime, and fast-paced combat. The setting helps separate it from the usual neon-heavy approach to this kind of shooter.
The demo is already available
You do not have to wait until launch to see what the idea looks like in motion. A free Cohen 1939 demo is available on Steam, covering the Prologue through Chapter 2.
The demo launched on May 22, 2026. The full game is currently scheduled for September 30, 2026.

Why Cohen 1939 is Game of the Week #72
Sometimes the Game of the Week hook needs a long explanation. This one really does not.
1939 Birmingham. Gangsters. A widow on a revenge mission. Fast top-down violence.
That is a strong setup, and the period setting immediately gives Cohen 1939 a different identity from many other top-down shooters.
The stated Peaky Blinders and Hotline Miami influences are obvious reference points, but the part worth watching is whether Cube of Cube can turn those influences into something with its own rhythm, characters, and sense of place.
Our impressions are based on the current demo, not the finished game, so this is not a verdict on how well the full campaign ultimately works. What we played gives us a good sense of the combat and presentation, but the final release may still differ.
