Death Howl: A Haunting Soulslike Deck Builder from The Outer Zone

Posted on January 18, 2025June 28, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl

Enter into the haunting and strategic world of Death Howl, the upcoming title from the talented Danish team The Outer Zone, in collaboration with 11 bit studios. This emotional journey blends souls-like exploration with card-based combat, set in a deeply atmospheric, Nordic-inspired realm. A demo will be available Monday, aligning with the 11-bit studios Publisher Sale on Steam.

Meet Ro: A Mother’s Journey into the Spirit Realm

Players step into the role of Ro, a grieving mother navigating a mystical world shaped by sorrow. Set in a spiritual Nordic stone-age landscape, Ro’s quest to reunite with her lost son unfolds across realms haunted by restless spirits and ancient powers.

Tactical Deck-Building Meets Grid-Based Combat

The game’s combat system revolves around turn-based, grid-aligned battles that challenge your strategic thinking. Players must craft and evolve decks to face increasingly difficult enemies. Totems, upgrades, and biome-specific mechanics enhance the layers of strategy needed to survive.

A Grim Open World with Emotional Depth

Unlike traditional roguelike or linear deck-builders, Death Howl offers a segmented open world. Each biome unveils more of Ro’s story, enriched by sorrowful memories, lost wisdom, and the lingering weight of love. New cards and relics are discovered as players push deeper into each emotionally loaded region.

A Small Team with a Powerful Vision

“The loss of a loved one is a universal truth—an inevitable part of our human experience,” says Malte Burup, Director, Artist, and Writer. Alongside him, Rasmus Nilsson (Programmer/Designer) and Lasse Sommer (Animator/Artist/Designer) have crafted this unique fusion of genre and emotional storytelling. The game is backed by the Danish Film Institute – The Games Scheme.
