Aloft Review a Sky High Adventure in Creativity and Community

Posted on January 18, 2025May 17, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl

A peaceful yet adventurous survival game where you build, explore, and heal the skies

Aloft isn’t your typical survival game. Instead of harsh wastelands or zombie hordes, it drops you onto a floating island in the sky—and lets your imagination take over. You’ll sail through windstorms, restore broken ecosystems, and build the skyship of your dreams. It’s cozy, creative, and still full of adventure.

Aloft

Release Date: In Early Access (15 Jan, 2025)

Genre: Survival, Exploration, Co-op

Publisher/Developer: Astrolabe Interactive

Platforms: Steam (PC)

From Island to Skyship: How It All Works

You start on a small floating island, and before long, you’re turning it into a fully functioning skyship. Using wind currents, you can explore the open skies, discover new islands, and unlock biomes full of life (and danger). The journey feels natural and rewarding—you’re not just surviving, you’re creating something beautiful along the way.

Healing the Skies—And Fighting What’s Broken

Even in its relaxing world, Aloft doesn’t ignore danger. Some islands—and even a massive flying beast called the Leviathan—are being consumed by corruption. You’ll need to fight off twisted creatures, cleanse infected areas, and gather ingredients to craft healing antidotes. The balance between calm exploration and strategic combat is surprisingly well done.

Play Solo or With Friends

Aloft really shines when you bring friends into the mix. Up to eight players can join the same game, and you can bring your custom island with you. It’s perfect for building together, sharing discoveries, and creating massive floating towns in the sky. It’s social, creative, and fun without ever feeling stressful.

Building, Gardening, and Creating Your Sky Life

If you love base-building, Aloft gives you tools galore. With over 600 pieces to work with, you can customize everything—your home, your farm, your airship. You can grow plants, take care of animals, and collect ruins to restore the environment. There’s even an island editor so you can build your own floating world and share it with others.

Still in Progress, But Already Worth Playing

Aloft is still in early access, and that comes with the usual bumps—some minor crashes and a few bugs. But overall, it’s remarkably polished for this stage. The core gameplay is strong, and you can tell there’s a lot more planned. If you’re okay with the occasional hiccup, it’s absolutely worth jumping into now.

Final Thoughts

Aloft is a rare kind of survival game. It’s peaceful without being boring, creative without being overwhelming, and it always gives you something to do—whether it’s sailing to a new island, restoring nature, or building your sky kingdom. It’s a great choice if you want a different kind of survival game that lets you relax, create, and still go on a meaningful adventure.

Why I Keep Coming Back

After spending 18 hours in the skies, I’m still finding new things to love about Aloft. Some games burn out fast—but this one keeps me curious. It’s one of the few survival games where I truly enjoy both the downtime and the action. If you want a calming escape you can share with friends, give it a shot. You might not want to come back down
