A simple room-builder, scaled by short-form reach and steady updates

My Dream Setup is a simulation game about building the room you’ve always dreamed of. The game includes a huge selection of furniture, computers and their accessories, posters, pictures, plants, and other interior details to experiment with. Created in just 4 months by a team of 2, it has now sold 500,000 copies. In this article, we’ll explore the My Dream Setup success formula and what made this game stand out.

Two strategies have helped propel its popularity. Short-form video across socials were ideal for communicating the game’s features, but more so its actual simplicity, sometimes the best games aren’t the most complex feature-laden games; they’re the simple ones, and My Dream Setup is a game about moving furniture and designing the perfect room. But TikTok didn’t just generate views, it created superb pre launch intention from players. Ninety thousand wishlists helped establish the game’s initial launch out of the gate and a strong proposition to build on. Secondly, it delivered consistent content for its players.

With this kind of traction, developers are wise to reward that kind of intent from players, especially for a game built around customization. Maintaining player interest is a strategy that needs to be built into the gameplay loop from the outset for this type of game. Give the players enough to play with, and they’ll stay. The game has been updated almost every month for nearly three years; that doesn’t just show loyalty, it shows commitment in maintaining the player experience.
Understand what your players love about your game and expand on those features, listen to what they’re asking for, and above al,l communicate with them directly.

Gaming has seen a real shift of late; attention spans are shorter, budgets are smaller, and wallet-busting multi-division teams are suffering market economics as trends shift and player anticipation fluctuates. KISS rules apply: Keep It Simple Stupid – build a simple, fun, and entertaining game that keeps the player playing. That’s the secret sauce right there. Create a trailer and promote and pimp the hell out of it across your socials, be present, be humble, but give players the reason to invest in you from the outset.
