Playdead Files Lawsuit Against Co-Founder Dino Patti Over Limbo Image

Posted on June 27, 2025June 30, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl

A long-running feud between the creators of Limbo and Inside has escalated into a full-blown legal battle

In a surprising development from Denmark’s celebrated indie studio Playdead, the company has officially filed a lawsuit against its co-founder Dino Patti. The lawsuit alleges unauthorized use of a Limbo image in a recent LinkedIn post, reigniting a years-long dispute between Patti and fellow co-founder Arnt Jensen.

The story first broke earlier this year when Patti revealed he had received what he described as “legal love letters” from Jensen for nearly a decade. These letters, according to Patti, frequently objected to his sharing of behind-the-scenes insights and images related to Limbo and Inside—the two games that brought Playdead global acclaim.Legal dispute concept showing two angry men in suits arguing face-to-face with “DAMAGES” label, symbolizing conflict or lawsuit.

Demanding Damages

The most recent letter, sent in March 2025, demanded 500,000 Danish Kroner (roughly $77,000 USD) in damages, citing Patti’s unauthorized use of a single image from Limbo in a LinkedIn post where he reflected on the game’s development. Patti claims the post was a harmless look back at the creative journey—but Playdead saw it as a violation of their intellectual property rights.

As of mid-June, multiple industry outlets including Video Games Chronicle, PCGamesInsider, and WN Hub have confirmed that legal action has formally been filed. Playdead stated the move was necessary “to protect the company’s business and reputation.” A silhouetted boy stands in a dark, eerie forest as a giant spider looms above him—iconic scene from the indie game Limbo.

Patti Responds

In a public post, Patti criticized the legal escalation, stating:

“The optics of a nearly 100-person company targeting a single individual is insane. They want to erase my name from the games I co-created.”

Patti also pointed out that he was a co-founder and executive producer, deeply involved in the creation of Limbo and Inside. He has since moved on to projects like Somerville and now leads Jumpship, which he re-acquired earlier this year.

A Feud Years in the Making

The split between Jensen and Patti dates back to 2016, when Patti left Playdead amid growing tensions. Since then, there’s been little public interaction—until now. This lawsuit not only reopens old wounds, but also raises larger questions about creative ownership, IP rights, and the dark side of indie development.

What This Means for the Industry

Playdead remains quiet on future titles, with their next project still under wraps. Meanwhile, this legal battle could cast a long shadow over the studio’s legacy—especially if it appears they’re trying to erase a key figure from their history.

For the broader gaming community, it’s a cautionary tale: even in the indie world, success doesn’t always come without conflict.
