Vale’s Echo Is a Cozy Horror Adventure About Death, Memory, and a Talking Skull

Posted on November 13, 2025November 14, 2025 By Aidan Minter

2D indie adventure Vale’s Echo sends a dead girl and her wisecracking skull through a surreal underworld of choices and consequences

Here at Fix Gaming Channel we like shining a bit more light on indie titles that, for whatever reason, might not get noticed by the mainstream audience. Every once in a while, a concept or an interesting visual is all it takes to shake the tree. Vale’s Echo is one of those games: a 2D cozy horror adventure that blends dark comedy, psychological themes, and beautifully simple surreal art.

Certain games make a dramatic emotional impact because of their narratives. Games like That Dragon, Cancer explore themes of death and loss in a point-and-click format, borne out of the real experiences that creators Ryan and Amy Green had after their third child, Joel, was diagnosed with terminal cancer at just 12 months old.

Vale’s Echo

Release: To be announced

Genre: Cozy horror adventure, indie

Developer / Publisher: Hollow Beak Games

Platforms: PC — Steam

While Vale’s Echo isn’t quite as emotionally raw or hard-hitting as That Dragon, Cancer, it still brings the concept of the protagonist’s death to the fore as a major plot point and the backbone of its core narrative. You play as Vale, a young woman who has died and wakes up on a train to the underworld with no memory of her past. Accompanied by a talking skull named Echo, which softens the otherwise dark premise, she must explore the surreal afterlife, solve unsettling puzzles, and confront her past fears and regrets to find answers about her life and death.

The journey to the afterlife forms the rich and surreal encounters that Vale experiences, all told through branching dialogue and meaningful choices that weave the relationships and memories that will inevitably dictate her fate.

Vale talks with a disembodied head on a train while the message “HEAD will remember that” appears.

In a sea of shooters, roguelikes, and platformers that all battle for space on Steam—and some of which start to blend into “me too” releases that audiences have to cut through—Vale’s Echo feels like it has the potential and dark humour to help it stand out as something a little more unique and worthwhile.

Clearly, others have noticed that too. The game was the recipient of the WINGS Award at the BLON animation and games festival, where the jury commended the title for successfully combining horror with exploration and puzzles in a way that kept players engaged.

The game was also a nominee for Best Art Direction in the recent Indie X awards—a nod to its extremely simple but highly effective animation style.

Hollow Beak Games hasn’t yet confirmed a release date, but we’re eagerly awaiting more details. For more information, you can check out the game’s Steam page here.

If you like keeping tabs on smaller indie releases, we’ve also covered the launch of Three Goblin Wobblin and the nature-focused Medieval Dynasty – Echoes of Nature DLC.
