Proton confirms global outage after Frankfurt datacenter failure

Proton says a critical cooling failure at its Frankfurt datacenter caused a global outage affecting several of its services.

Update: Access to Proton services has now returned for Fix Gaming Channel. However, Proton’s official status page still lists the Global Outage as unresolved, with Mail, VPN, Calendar, Drive, Pass and several other services remaining under partial outage status. Proton says services are beginning to recover for some users while restoration work continues.

Fix Gaming Channel received a “Servers are unreachable” error while Proton’s global outage was affecting access.

The outage began shortly after midnight CEST on August 27, with Proton Mail, Calendar, Drive, Pass, SimpleLogin, Wallet and Lumo among the services affected. Proton VPN was also affected, although it remained available for some users.

At 00:38 CEST, Proton said it had identified a critical cooling failure at its Frankfurt datacenter and was shifting traffic to backup sites.

At 01:37 CEST, Proton said its recovery efforts were beginning to yield results and that services were starting to return for some users.

Proton notes that its status page does not update in real time and information may be delayed. Users can follow Proton’s official service status page for further updates.
