Stranded Deep 2 leaves the Pacific behind for an endless river through the desert
Stranded Deep 2 will launch into Steam Early Access in 2027, taking the survival series from tropical islands into a scorching desert wilderness built around an endless river, mobile bases and a living ecosystem.
North Beach Games has revealed the first official trailer for Stranded Deep 2 alongside the launch of its Steam page. Stranded Deep co-creator Sam Edwards returns as Creative Director, but the sequel is taking the survival formula somewhere very different.
I have around 80 hours in the original Stranded Deep, so I’m genuinely thrilled to see where the sequel goes. The move away from the Pacific islands into a desert and river frontier immediately makes this feel like more than simply a bigger version of the first game.

The Pacific is gone
Instead of being stranded across the Pacific Ocean, players now face a harsh desert wilderness where an endless river cuts through canyons, dunes and valleys. The river acts as the main route through the world, with travel by kayak and raft leading to new biomes and handcrafted locations.
Health, hunger, thirst and exposure remain part of survival, but the completely different environment should change how those systems feel. Desert survival is something we have also spent time with in Dune: Awakening, while Subnautica 2 takes survival in the opposite direction beneath the water.

Your base can move with you
One of the sequel’s more interesting additions is the mobile base. Players will be able to build floating homes and take them along the river, rather than leaving everything behind whenever they move deeper into the wilderness. Players can also settle on the riverbank and build a more permanent home.
The environment itself is more interactive too. Dynamic water and terrain will let players dig into the landscape, reshape terrain and even redirect the river. Crafting is being expanded with a more physical approach, allowing players to choose the materials used to build tools and structures.
Building a home while adapting to a hostile world is a big part of survival games we already follow, including Windrose and Winter Survival, but the endless river gives Stranded Deep 2 its own clear identity.
Water remains central to Stranded Deep 2, with its new world built around rivers, exploration and survival.
A living ecosystem means you are not always the hunter
Stranded Deep 2 is also introducing a living ecosystem, with animals roaming, hunting and following a real food chain. Players become part of that ecosystem rather than automatically sitting at the top of it.
The hippo encounter shown in the first screenshots makes that point rather effectively.
The wildlife in Stranded Deep 2 is part of a living ecosystem — and players will not always be at the top of the food chain.
Co-op and Cartographer are returning
Co-op is being developed as what North Beach Games calls a first-class feature, giving players a way to explore the new frontier together.
The returning Cartographer has also been rebuilt as Cartographer 2.0, allowing players to create their own locations and experiences and share them with friends across platforms.
North Beach Games says Stranded Deep 2 has been designed around a modular foundation that can grow through regular updates, with additional biomes, locations, wildlife, crafting and Cartographer content planned as development continues.
North Beach Games has confirmed that Stranded Deep 2 will launch into Steam Early Access in 2027, with the exact date still to be announced. After around 80 hours with the original, this is firmly one I’ll be watching.
