What It Takes to Run an Indie Gaming Outlet Today

Posted on May 14, 2025June 9, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl
The story behind Fix Gaming Channel — and why I’ll never stop.

I’ve Always Done This

Since I was a kid, I’ve been creating, recording, writing, and sharing — using whatever I had. I started with a cassette player to make music. Later, I got a 4-track studio and began layering sound properly. I copied Commodore 64 tapes — not to steal, but to access games I couldn’t otherwise afford. That’s just how things worked back then.

I played DOOM and Tetris when they launched. I used a dial-up modem to download shareware and game soundtracks. I’ve always been drawn to music, creativity, and gaming — the core things I still focus on today.

Everything I’m doing now is a more advanced, more intentional extension of that same passion.
Just now it’s more strategic, more technical, and a whole lot more intense.

But the heart?
Still the same.

I’m Indie Through and Through

I’m an indie musician. I’ve composed, recorded, mixed, and shared music by ear and instinct.
I’m an indie creator. I don’t work for a corporation. I don’t chase trends. I’ve built Fix Gaming Channel with whatever I had available — time, passion, and persistence.

I don’t make games, but I do everything I can to support the people who do.

Not because I want credit.
Not because I think I’m better than anyone.
And not because I see others as competition.

I’ve never looked at another outlet, YouTuber, or creator and thought, “They’re the enemy.”
I see them as inspiration.
I learn from every single person I’ve connected with — and I’m grateful for that.

But I know how some people see me.
Fix Gaming Channel gets viewed as a competitor by a lot of people.
Some have even pretended to support what I do, just to dig into my process — then disappear once they get what they wanted.

That stings. But I won’t change who I am.

If you want to know how I work?
Just ask. I’ll tell you.

I believe in building things together — not tearing each other down.

I Don’t Do This for Money — But Let’s Be Honest About That Too

People ask if I make money doing this.
The truth? Barely.

I work 15+ hours a day, 7 days a week. I write, edit, design, promote, reply, optimize — and do it all because I care. I do get help from a few awesome people, and that allows me to do a lot more. But the pressure, the platform, the vision — that’s still all on me.

Interested in my earnings?
Feel free to reach out, and I’ll provide the details.
Alternatively, if you know where to look, the information is publicly available. Just to be clear — it’s not sustainable, but it’s enough to keep the work going for now.

But I’m not in this for the paycheck. I’m in it for the art, the people, and the games that deserve better than getting buried by algorithms.

About the Team

I may run Fix Gaming Channel day to day, but I’m not alone — and I need to say this clearly:

Thank you, Fix Gaming Team. You know who you are.

I don’t have a big staff. I don’t have departments. But what I do have are a few really good people — true to what they’re doing, and why.
Some are learning as they go, with no formal experience, but they bring other talents that are just as valuable — and they’re willing to learn it all. That means everything.

My better half is an SEO expert, and that helps a lot in this jungle — especially when it comes to navigating search and social visibility.

And there’s one person — a true professional — I turn to for honest feedback, ideas, and the kind of industry experience I don’t have.
Sometimes, they turn to me too — to get their thoughts out, put ideas into words, or even write a few things quietly in the background, no credit needed, and no questions asked.

I’m always willing to learn from everyone, at all times. And I do.

So again — thank you. This wouldn’t work without you.
Well… I’m wrong — it would.
It would just take me 10 years longer.

This Is Bigger Than Me

Right now, I’m still manually migrating 600+ articles to our new website.
If I write 5 articles in a day, I try to migrate at least 10 old ones.

And no, it’s not “copy, paste, publish.”
Every article needs to be formatted, restructured, and updated.
Every image — and I’m often working with 6–10 per post — has to be added by hand with proper alt text, captions, file names, SEO titles, and layout formatting.

Even a short article can take hours if the assets aren’t ready.
Sure, sometimes a GTA VI update is quick — because I already have the screenshots and links lined up.
But new indie games? Showcases? Features?

They take time. They take care. They take focus.

And honestly? I’ll probably laugh in a couple of years about how “easy” this part was.
Because, knowing me, I’ll be doing even more by then.

Recently, I watched all the big gaming outlets and YouTubers get early access to DOOM: The Dark Ages.
They got their hands on it long before I did — and yeah, that pissed me off a little.
Not because I think I’m better than them, but because I’m doing the same kind of work.
The same effort. The same coverage. Just without the massive follower count.

But I get it.
I’m not a “priority” for big publishers. I’m probably buried on page 5 or 6 of their media lists — if I’m even listed at all.

And that’s fine. Because I’ll keep showing up, doing the work, and proving every day that I’m here for the right reasons.

We Don’t Need to Play by Google’s Rules

We don’t need to play the game the way Google wants us to.

We’re not keywords. We’re not SEO bait.
We’re gamers.
We’re game developers.
We’re independent creators trying to make something real and keep it alive in a system built to bury voices like ours.

So, no — I’m not a PR firm.
I’m not a publisher.
I’m not a big company with a massive budget.

I’m just the news guy.

I do this to help.
And I’ll keep doing it.

One Last Thing

If no one shares an article about your game… can anyone really see it?
Probably not.

But that’s something we can change — together.

So let’s build something better.
Not just for clicks.
But for the love of games.

I don’t need to do this at all… I’m just fine. But I have to.
