Outlast Series Brings Its Terror to the Big Screen With Lionsgate and Red Barrels Collaboration

Posted on October 31, 2024May 2, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

A New Era of Horror: From Game to Film

In a thrilling move for horror enthusiasts, Red Barrels, in partnership with Lionsgate and acclaimed horror producer Roy Lee, has announced a feature film based on the chilling universe of the Outlast video game series. The film’s script will be penned by JT Petty, the original writer behind the Outlast games.

Expanding the Outlast Universe

The Outlast series, renowned for its intense psychological horror, is set to transition from gaming consoles to cinema screens, guided by the original writer and creative visionary JT Petty.

“Red Barrels has been pushing the limits of horror in games for more than a decade,” said Petty. “Expanding the Outlast Universe into film is an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the characters and killers we love.”

Roy Lee Joins the Fright

Horror maestro Roy Lee, known for iconic films like It and Barbarian, brings his cinematic expertise to the project. His goal: preserve the fear-inducing authenticity and immersive horror that the games are celebrated for.

“Outlast set a new standard for immersion in horror gaming.” Lee remarked. “Its deep lore provides a perfect foundation for a film that delves into the psychological and physical horrors at the core of the franchise.”

Lionsgate’s Legacy of Horror

With a legacy of horror hits like the Saw franchise, Lionsgate brings seasoned expertise to ensure that the Outlast film maintains the franchise’s brutal tension, disturbing soundscapes, and dread-filled pacing.

From 2012 to 2024: A Franchise Evolved

Since its debut in 2012, Outlast has expanded into a full-fledged franchise with multiple entries, including:

  • Outlast (2013)
  • Outlast: Whistleblower (2014)
  • Outlast 2 (2017)
  • The Outlast Trials (2024)

The franchise explores dark themes of control, corruption, and institutional horror—all elements ripe for cinematic exploration.

Looking Ahead: A Nightmare Come True

“As die-hard fans of horror across every medium, we are great admirers of Roy Lee’s and Lionsgate’s work,” said David Chateauneuf, Co-Founder of Red Barrels. “To now work on an Outlast film with true horror legends is a dream— or should I say, nightmare come true.”
