The Outlast Trials Hits Milestone and Launches Toxic Shock Event

Posted on April 13, 2024May 2, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

2 Million Players and a New Wave of Fear

MONTRÉAL, Québec, April 12, 2024 — Red Barrels, the innovative game studio based in Montréal, is excited to announce a significant achievement for their latest horror sensation, “The Outlast Trials”. Within just a month of its official release from Early Access, the game has attracted over 2 million players across various platforms, including PC, Xbox, and PS5.

To celebrate this milestone, Red Barrels is launching “Toxic Shock”, the game’s first limited-time event since its 1.0 release.

Toxic Shock Event Details

Running from April 16 to May 7, 2024, the “Toxic Shock” event will challenge players with a new layer of psychological and environmental horror. Alongside the event, several gameplay improvements have been rolled out to elevate the experience.

Highlights Include:

  • Unique modifiers and deadly new gameplay mechanics
  • Community-driven updates based on player feedback
  • Fresh Mk-Challenges like “Tilt The Scales of Justice” and “Sabotage the Factory”

Gameplay Stats That Speak Volumes

Since the 1.0 launch, the game has recorded:

  • Over 38 million player deaths
  • 600,000+ successful escapes

This shows just how brutal yet addictive the experience has become for fans of psychological survival horror.

A Cold War Nightmare

Set in 1959 during the height of the Cold War, “The Outlast Trials” places players in the shoes of human test subjects caught in sinister experiments conducted by the Murkoff Corporation. The game offers deep character customization and features the Sleep Room — a hub where players can socialize and regroup between missions.

Community at the Core

“Listening to our players is crucial; their feedback directly influences our development path,” said Alex Charbonneau, Game Director at Red Barrels. The studio remains committed to shaping a terrifying multiplayer experience driven by community involvement.

What Critics Are Saying

PC Gamer, GamesRadar+, and other major gaming media outlets have praised the game’s ability to deliver intense, co-op horror with deeply immersive mechanics.
