“We make our friends; we make our enemies; but God makes our next-door neighbour.” G. K. Chesterton once said. It’s the perfect quote that headlines Grandma Left Me a Building’s Steam page to give you some idea of what you’re in for.
Presented as a cosy apartment management sim, Grandma Left Me a Building tasks the player with restoring the ruined building your grandma left you. You’ll pick your tenants and manage neighbour dynamics, since human nature dictates that not everyone is going to get along. You’ll also have to upgrade the building to keep it functional, hire staff, and handle the inevitable chaos that follows.

Everyone Needs To Get Along
In terms of core gameplay mechanics, Grandma Left Me a Building is centred around the eccentric collection of characters and personalities that make up the tenants in your building. It’s not going to be easy either. In order for this wacky collective to cohabit, they have to get along. Wrong pairings bring chaos. The right ones bring peace.
Scrutiny, it would appear, pays off, because it’s ill-advised to put a midnight guitar-shredding elf and a philosophy-lecturing yeti as neighbours. Keeping the tenant complaints to a minimum makes life easier as a landlord. Effectively you’re looking to reduce potential friction between personalities to mitigate the stress of sorting out the mess.

A Management Sim With a Difference
The rent you collect needs to be managed, repairs need to be organised, bills and wages need to be paid, and the ever-demanding quirks and needs of your tenants have to be catered for. The cosy positioning relates to the lack of time pressure: you plan at your own pace, making the task of managing eccentric tenants a little easier.
Tenant placement uses drag and drop, which makes it feel intuitive. You can plan at your own pace while managing tenant complaints and resources. The UI has received updates based on player feedback, with clearer tenant and building information to help players avoid getting bogged down in confusing layers.

Happiness is a Virtue
It’s not just building maintenance you need to stay on top of. Managing tenant happiness and satisfaction is also part of the day-to-day, while increasing the appeal and value of the building creates a longer-term goal. The smaller, more intricate tenant issues are just as important.
