It’s fair to say that PC gamers were spoilt for choice during October’s Steam Next Fest. Many demos struggled to cut through the noise, but some gained even stronger momentum with players. GameDiscoverCo tracked more than 7,300 demos, compared with roughly 4,400 in June’s event.

Titles that already had good momentum going into Steam Next Fest tend to perform strongly and use the opportunity to amplify their marketing efforts to gamers eager to check out new games.

Brutal survival FPS Frostrail already had some decent momentum as it entered October’s Steam Next Fest. In a 28 October update, the team reported more than 80,000 new wishlists, taking the total above 600,000.

Furthermore, developer FakeFish reported in the same update that the demo had achieved over 30,000 daily active users and an impressive 191,000 unique players.

Solo and Co-op FPS Survival

Frostrail offers up solo or co-op FPS survival gameplay as players explore and endure a frozen, corrupted world, utilising a train as a mobile refuge, carrying everything they need to survive. As their struggle for survival grows heavier, so must their train. Players will need to reinforce its walls, craft weapon stations, and upgrade the engine to outpace the horrors that hunt them. They can even expand the train with new carriages, crafting stations and storage, forging a moving fortress against the cold and the terrors beyond.

Things That Go Bump in the Night

It’s a game where decisions have big consequences: every step away from your train is a gamble. Do you risk death for precious supplies or stay safe and go without? It’s not just the sub-zero environment that can shorten your life. Out in the darkness of night lurks extreme danger: revenants, zombified, melee-focused enemies that attack in large numbers, and corrupted soldiers, smarter ranged combatants that appear in smaller groups and feature varied classes. Beyond that are the natural predators that roam the wilderness.

Modular Weapon Crafting

Lead game designer Ez Jämsen explained in a June 2025 interview with GamingBolt that Frostrail brings a ‘guns first’ approach to survival. Players can expect World War I-inspired pistols, shotguns, rifles and machine guns, as well as an initial handful of basic melee weapons. A modular crafting system gives players the option to further enhance their weapons.

Following the game’s popularity during October’s Steam Next Fest, FakeFish extended the demo beyond the event. The studio confirmed on 2 November that the demo had ended, with development continuing towards Early Access.
