NBA 2K24 Game Pass promotional splash art with vibrant purple and orange rays

Nba 2k24 Joins Game Pass in Strategic Move Reveals Gamespots Eddie Makuch

Posted on March 11, 2024August 6, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl

In a noteworthy shift for sports gaming, NBA 2K24 officially joined the Xbox Game Pass lineup on March 11, 2024. As first reported by Eddie Makuch on GameSpot, this decision arrives just six months after the game’s initial launch in September 2023.

Despite selling over 7 million copies, NBA 2K24 underperformed relative to parent company Take-Two Interactive’s expectations. The Game Pass inclusion appears to be part of a broader strategy to boost player engagement and visibility, especially for a title whose economy has been heavily scrutinized for microtransactions.

Why This Matters: Take-Two’s Strategy Shift

Historically, Take-Two has avoided launching brand-new titles into subscription services. Instead, they’ve opted to drip-feed legacy titles on a case-by-case basis. The arrival of NBA 2K24 on Game Pass could signal a subtle pivot, likely inspired by the cyclical success of GTA V during its rotating Game Pass availability. This marks one of the first major sports titles from Take-Two entering Game Pass so soon after release.

Microtransactions and Market Reaction

While NBA 2K24 has been criticized for its aggressive in-game monetization, bringing the game to Game Pass may ease the barrier to entry for casual players. It offers potential to grow the active player base, which in turn may bolster revenue through the game’s extensive microtransaction systems—even if initial sales fell short.

Subscription Services Continue to Reshape Gaming

Game Pass is becoming an increasingly critical distribution tool, not just for smaller indie releases but now for blockbuster sports franchises. The addition of NBA 2K24 strengthens Microsoft’s value proposition and opens a new window for publishers to gauge post-launch engagement strategies in a subscription-driven ecosystem.

NBA 2K24

Release Date: September 8, 2023

Genre: Sports, Simulation

Developer/Publisher: Visual Concepts / Take-Two Interactive

Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam), PlayStation 4 & 5, Nintendo Switch

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, the inclusion of high-profile titles like NBA 2K24 on Game Pass could become a bellwether for future release strategies across the industry.
