Steam posts its strongest September on record, according to analyst estimates
Steam generated an estimated $1.7 billion in gross revenue during September 2026, according to market intelligence firm Alinea Analytics. Tom’s Hardware‘s report, “Steam hits record $1.7 billion in September 2026 despite soaring PC hardware costs,” says the estimate would make it the platform’s best September to date, up 13% from September 2025.
The figure is an analyst estimate rather than a number officially disclosed by Valve. PC Gamer‘s report, “After a record-breaking September, it’s safe to say Steam’s yearly revenue will blow past $20B for the first time,” cites the same Alinea Analytics estimate of $5.5 billion for the third quarter and $16.5 billion for the first nine months of 2026.

Fix Gaming Channel has been following several shifts around Steam, including Valve’s move toward more personalized Steam discount events and the ongoing legal scrutiny of Steam’s platform commission structure.
New games helped, but established franchises still dominated
Among the 500 highest-grossing games tracked in the analysis, established intellectual property accounted for 79.5% of revenue, while new IP released in 2026 contributed 20.5%.
New releases still played an important role. Wardogs was highlighted as one of September’s strongest new launches, with an estimated $86.9 million in Steam revenue. Other notable releases included Onimusha: Way of the Sword, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Bodycam, and EA Sports FC 27.
Free-to-play remains a major part of Steam spending
Free-to-play titles represented 25.6% of revenue among the top 500 games in the analysis, despite making up only 16% of that group. Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, PUBG, and Dota 2 were estimated to have generated almost $168 million combined during September.
Steam could pass $20 billion for the year
With an estimated $16.5 billion generated through September, analysts now expect Steam to exceed $20 billion in annual gross revenue for the first time if the final quarter maintains its current pace.
That forecast comes during a year in which PC players are also dealing with higher hardware costs. Even so, spending on software and in-game content has remained strong, suggesting that the size of the active PC gaming market is continuing to grow.
