One hour at Caldora Airport revealed impressive graphics and a customs simulator with more going on beneath the surface
I played Airport Contraband: Prologue for one hour, and its detailed airport, strong presentation and methodical customs work made it an easy Indie Gem of the Day pick.
Our recent Indie Gem picks have ranged from the nerve-racking Night Portable playtest to the chaotic action of Anomaly President. Airport Contraband: Prologue delivers a completely different type of pressure.
What I played on PC was really good. The graphics were the first thing that stood out. The airport has a clean, detailed appearance that immediately gives the prologue a stronger sense of place than I expected.

A surprisingly impressive airport
The visual presentation made the strongest first impression during my hour with the prologue. The terminal does not feel like a bare room built around a few inspection mechanics. Its lighting, passenger models and environmental detail help sell the idea that you are working inside an active airport.
You need to pay attention to documents, passengers and their belongings rather than rush through each encounter.

Every passenger becomes a problem to solve
The central loop places you behind airport customs. Passengers arrive with documents and luggage that need to be inspected, while restricted items and contraband can be hidden among seemingly ordinary belongings.
The work is methodical, but that is also where the tension comes from. Missing one detail could mean allowing something illegal through the airport. Being too suspicious could mean denying entry to someone who has done nothing wrong.
The body scanner makes the inspection work more than surface-level. A detailed search can reveal dangerous items concealed beneath a passenger’s clothing, including a large knife hidden across someone’s back.
More than a straightforward customs simulator
Airport Contraband: Prologue also introduces roguelike progression. Perks improve your abilities as a customs officer, while eventual identity changes allow permanent choices and progress to carry into another run.
The prologue is open-ended, so players can continue working, experimenting with different decisions and developing their character rather than reaching a quick scripted ending.
DRAGO entertainment is no stranger to simulation games. Fix Gaming Channel previously covered its work while looking at Food Truck Simulator and Aquarist on PlayStation.
Why it earns the Indie Gem spot
The graphics were impressive, the customs work was easy to understand, and the larger progression systems give the idea room to grow.
It takes a job that could easily become repetitive and surrounds it with suspicious passengers, illegal goods, difficult decisions and the possibility of approaching another run differently.
That is enough to make Airport Contraband: Prologue our Indie Gem of the Day and something worth trying while the free prologue is available.
