CipSoft Takes Over The Settlers Online from Ubisoft

Posted on April 2, 2025July 18, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl

A New Chapter Begins for the Classic Browser Strategy Game

It’s official — CipSoft is now in charge of The Settlers Online. After more than 15 years under Ubisoft Blue Byte, the popular browser-based strategy game is getting a fresh start. CipSoft, best known for the long-running MMORPG Tibia, has taken over the game’s operations and future development.

Same Dev Team, New Office

Fans of The Settlers Online can breathe easy. The existing development team isn’t going anywhere — they’ll continue working on the game from CipSoft’s new office in Düsseldorf. The game itself will soon be migrated to CipSoft’s infrastructure, and the company plans to double down on consistent updates and long-term support.

“The Settlers Online, with its passionate community, is a perfect match for us. We are committed to investing in the game’s future, prioritizing sustainable growth and long-term success.”

– Stephan Vogler, Co-founder and Managing Director at CipSoft

Ubisoft Passes the Torch

Ubisoft’s Benedikt Grindel, Managing Director of Blue Byte, welcomed the change with confidence. He believes CipSoft is the right studio to carry the game forward — and that this transition is also a great opportunity for the dev team to keep doing what they do best.

“This transition is not only a continuation of The Settlers Online’s legacy but also a great opportunity for the development team to thrive under new guidance.”

– Benedikt Grindel, Managing Director at Ubisoft Blue Byte

What This Means for CipSoft (and Players)

CipSoft has been making online games for nearly 30 years — and they’re not slowing down. Their flagship title Tibia is still going strong, recently adding its first-ever new playable class. Meanwhile, their upcoming project Persist Online is still in development.

To support this growing portfolio, CipSoft recently launched MultiPayer — a platform that allows other game developers to use their trusted payment system. Naturally, The Settlers Online will be integrated into this system too, benefiting from smoother transactions and cross-project synergies.

Looking Ahead

While Ubisoft will continue to hold the rights to the Settlers brand, CipSoft now has full control over the future of The Settlers Online. And from the looks of it, that future is in capable hands. With a dedicated team, solid infrastructure, and a commitment to sustainable development, CipSoft is ready to breathe new life into a beloved online strategy classic.
