Epic says a Fortnite slowdown forced another major round of cuts
Epic Games has announced layoffs affecting more than 1,000 employees, with CEO Tim Sweeney saying the company has been spending more than it is making after a downturn in Fortnite engagement that began in 2025. In Epic’s official statement, Sweeney said the cuts, together with more than $500 million in identified cost savings tied to contracting, marketing, and open roles, are meant to put the company on more stable ground.
Sweeney also said the layoffs are not related to AI, but rather to wider industry pressure, slower growth, and the challenge of keeping Fortnite fresh over time.
