Jaws: Retro Edition brings the 1987 NES classic back to PS5 and Nintendo Switch

1987’s NES Jaws resurfaces on PS5 and Nintendo Switch

Limited Run Games is resurrecting the 1987 Nintendo Entertainment System game Jaws as Jaws: Retro Edition for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders for the new physical release run from December 19, 2025 through January 18, 2026 via the
Limited Run Games store, giving collectors a fixed window to secure their copy.

It’s another example of older titles getting a second life on modern platforms, something we’ve also seen in more recent releases like our first impressions of
Overkill Squad and narrative-heavy throwbacks such as
The Last Case of John Morley. This time though, it’s a licensed shark classic from the NES era returning just in time for the film’s 50th anniversary.

Originally released in 1987, Jaws on NES puts you in control of a small boat patrolling the ocean, shifting between top-down exploration and side-scrolling action as you battle smaller sea creatures, collect shells as currency, and ultimately confront the great white itself. For this new edition, Limited Run is using its Carbon Engine tech to keep the core game intact while layering on modern niceties like save anywhere, rewind, achievements/trophies, a music player, and a gallery for artwork and materials from the time.

On top of the original version, Jaws Retro Edition also includes an “Enhanced Edition” ROM hack that expands the game into a larger, multi-chapter adventure. According to Limited Run, this enhanced mode adds new quests and objectives, more abilities and weapons for both your boat and diver, tougher enemy encounters, and a deeper take on the NES game’s role-playing elements – all threaded with nods to the different Jaws films.

Jaws Retro Edition brings the 1987 NES sharkfest back as a physical release on PS5 and Nintendo Switch, complete with a booklet and modern enhancements.

Two physical editions are on the way. The standard Jaws: Retro Edition (PS5/Switch) is priced at $34.99 and includes a physical copy of the game plus an eight-page booklet. For collectors, the Bigger Boat Edition (PS5/Switch) comes in at $99.99 and adds an NES-inspired box, soundtrack CD, Jaws keychain pin badge, enamel sign, and a pixelated shark lamp on top of the base game.

As usual for Limited Run, these are open pre-orders rather than a traditional retail release. Jaws Retro Edition is region-free, and once the pre-order window closes on January 18, 2026, you’ll be waiting for manufacturing and shipping rather than simply grabbing a copy off a shelf. If you like having retro boxes lined up next to modern cases – or you just have a soft spot for licensed oddities from the NES era – this looks like one of the more interesting resurrections they’ve done in a while.
