Karma the Dark World Censored in Japan

Posted on February 21, 2025October 7, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl

KARMA: The Dark World faces regional release hurdles in Japan due to rating board restrictions—while uncensored PC and Xbox versions move forward.

The upcoming psychological horror game KARMA: The Dark World has hit a regulatory snag in Japan, delaying its PlayStation launch in the region. While console manufacturers have not objected to the game’s content, the local ratings board has flagged issues, forcing a temporary hold on the Japanese PS5 release.

Censorship Dispute

Despite no objections from Sony or Microsoft, the Japanese rating board’s decision has delayed the PlayStation release specifically in Japan. The PC version, however, remains unaffected by the restriction and will release globally in its uncensored form.

Additionally, an uncensored Xbox version is in development and will launch later, with the exact date still to be announced.

Release Schedule

  • PC & PS5 (Uncensored) – March 27, 2025
  • Xbox (Uncensored) – Release Date TBA

The PlayStation version for Japan is still planned but will launch at a later date after necessary content adjustments are made to comply with regional guidelines.

Censorship in Gaming

As game developers continue to explore darker and more complex themes, regional censorship remains a challenge. While platforms like Steam allow more flexibility in content, console versions often face stricter regulatory hurdles depending on territory. This latest case with KARMA: The Dark World once again highlights the ongoing debate between creative freedom and cultural standards in the gaming industry.
