Riven VR official wishlist announcement by Cyan Worlds

Riven Enters VR for the First Time on Meta Quest 2 & 3.

Posted on May 15, 2024May 2, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

Spokane, United States, May 14th, 2024 – A new era begins for one of the most revered puzzle-adventure games of all time. Cyan Worlds has officially announced that Riven, the sequel to Myst, is launching into virtual reality for the very first time. This updated version will be available on Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, Windows (VR and flatscreen), and Mac.

A Landmark Update Since 1997

Originally released in 1997, Riven was groundbreaking in both visual fidelity and puzzle design. Now, nearly three decades later, it’s being reimagined for VR through Unreal Engine 5, delivering a level of immersion and interaction never before possible. This update is more than just a port—it’s a full remake built for a modern audience.

“One of the most astounding experiences for me is being fully immersed in Riven in VR with no strings attached on Meta Quest 3,” said Rand Miller, co-founder of Cyan Worlds. “It’s mind-blowing to have jumped from the original static images to wrapping myself in Riven.”

A Cinematic Journey Rebuilt in VR

The VR experience enhances the emotional and visual depth of Riven’s world, especially on the Meta Quest 3, where higher resolution and standalone hardware power make the island environments feel truly alive. This immersive upgrade is more than just an aesthetic facelift; it’s a chance to experience the story and puzzles in a tactile, intuitive way.

The Story: Conflict, Mystery, and Discovery

Riven continues the narrative of the Myst universe, placing players in a crumbling world ruled by a tyrant and teetering on collapse. As you uncover secrets and solve intricate puzzles, you’ll be drawn deeper into the lore of the D’ni civilization and the struggles of rebellion and resistance. VR makes the story feel more real, emotional, and personal—like you’re truly part of the world, not just watching it.

Wishlist Now and Prepare for the Journey

Riven is now up for wishlist on all major platforms. It’s your chance to experience this classic game in a whole new way—fully rebuilt for VR. Whether you’re new or returning, Riven could be one of this year’s most unforgettable VR experiences.
