Review: Shift 87 – A Psychological Horror That Tests Perception and Patience

Posted on July 24, 2024September 28, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

A psychological horror game that tests perception and patience

Shift 87 is a first-person observation horror game from Pixelsplit built around memorizing environments, spotting anomalies, and deciding whether what you saw was really there before.

Released on July 23, 2024, Shift 87 is a first-person observation horror game developed by Pixelsplit, the creators of REVEIL. Players take the role of a shift worker tasked with identifying anomalies inside eerie environments where tiny changes can become much more unsettling once you start doubting your own memory.

Developer Background

Pixelsplit previously created REVEIL, a psychological thriller built around the troubled memories of Walter Thompson and the Nelson Bros Circus. Shift 87 takes a more focused observation-horror approach, but it still relies heavily on environmental detail, atmosphere, and the player’s attention.

Game Description

Shift 87 contains three intricately designed environments with 66 possible anomalies ranging from subtle changes to much more obvious disturbances. The challenge is to memorize each area and report deviations using the designated device.

Accuracy matters. An incorrect report resets the sequence, so the game tests both observation and patience under pressure.

Atmosphere and Setting

The game excels at creating tension through its environments. Howling winds, pounding rain, unsettling sounds, and small visual changes combine to make each run feel uncomfortable even when nothing dramatic is happening.

Visual and Technical Performance

During my time with it, Shift 87 ran smoothly without technical issues getting in the way. That matters in an observation game because visual clarity is part of the mechanic. When the entire challenge is noticing what changed, the game needs to make sure technical noise is not creating false clues.

Conclusion

Score: 7/10. Shift 87 is technically solid and atmospherically effective, with a simple concept that puts real pressure on the player’s observational skills. Its limited scope and shorter structure may leave some players wanting more, but fans of observation horror will find a focused experience with replay value through its randomized anomalies.
