Promotional key art for Skautfold: Into the Fray featuring eldritch horrors and pixel combat

Skautfold Into the Fray Unleashes Dark Forces on the Isle of Portland

Posted on October 19, 2024July 1, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl

Warsaw, Poland, October 17, 2024 – Virtual Alchemy, the team behind the newly revealed strategy RPG Band of Crusaders, has confirmed that their dark tactical RPG Skautfold: Into the Fray is now officially launching on GOG. The move follows overwhelming player feedback and strong community interest since the game’s debut on Steam. By making the game available on GOG, the developers hope to bring their unique fusion of horror and strategy to an even broader player base.

A Descent into Darkness: The Story Behind Into the Fray

Developed by the team behind the Skautfold series and published by Red Art Games, Into the Fray casts players as Hito, a loyal Knight of the Empire. His original mission is to investigate the disappearance of a royal figure and uncover the truth behind the rebellious Sons of Washington. But once Hito steps foot on the Isle of Portland, it becomes clear that something far more sinister is at play. An unnatural Fog descends, warping the land and releasing unfathomable horrors that test both his sanity and resolve.

Mission-Based Progression with Player-Driven Paths

The game structure revolves around a branching overworld map that allows players to carve their own route through the haunted landscapes. From city streets filled with corpses to underground chambers echoing with whispers, each location has a distinct flavor and danger level. Dark rituals, ruined chapels, and forbidden relics await those daring enough to explore deeper into the Fog.

Meaningful Choices

Each path taken affects what you uncover and the enemies you face, giving every playthrough a different rhythm. Tactical planning is essential, not just in combat, but in choosing which threats to confront first.

Weaponry That Blends History with Horror

Into the Fray offers a deadly mix of classic firearms and experimental weapons inspired by the inventions of Nikola Tesla. Hito can carry revolvers, rifles, and even powerful prototypes designed for maximum impact. But weaponry alone isn’t your only ally—the environment itself plays a critical role.

Environmental Combat Tools

Debris can be kicked toward enemies. Barriers can be smashed for cover or escape routes. Every skirmish is enhanced by the game’s persistent gore system, which leaves visual traces of each encounter. Blood stains, crumbled walls, and shattered furniture reflect your progress and decisions in real time.

A Pixelated Vision of Lovecraftian Horror

Graphically, the game embraces a pixel art style, but not at the cost of immersion. Its oblique top-down view showcases grim details, oppressive lighting, and creeping dread. The Lovecraftian narrative bleeds into every corner, capturing an atmosphere of isolation and unknowable horror.

Why This GOG Release Matters

By expanding to the GOG platform, Virtual Alchemy ensures that players who prefer DRM-free experiences can now access the game. This move also speaks volumes about the developer’s commitment to listening to their community—something that has fueled this series’ cult following over the years.
