Doom the Dark Ages a New Chapter in the Legendary Franchise

Posted on July 8, 2024January 16, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

A medieval war against Hell — and a heavier, meaner DOOM Slayer

DOOM: The Dark Ages is the modern trilogy’s prequel — a single-player action FPS that rewinds the clock into a dark medieval conflict where the Slayer is treated like a weapon built for war. It released on May 15, 2025, and it’s available across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S (including Game Pass on Xbox/PC tiers that support it).

A Glimpse into a Darker Era

This time, the tone leans into medieval brutality — a kingdom-level siege, Hell at the gates, and the Slayer placed at the center of a mythic war. It’s still DOOM at heart, but framed more like a legend being forged, with a stronger cinematic push than the “drop you in and let you rip” energy of earlier entries.

Combat tools reflect that shift. Familiar firepower returns, but the headline new kit is the Shield Saw — built for aggressive defense and close-range punishment — alongside other medieval-flavored weapons that push the Slayer into brawling distance more often.

Epic Battles and New Challenges

The scale is one of the big “new era” tells. Alongside ground combat, The Dark Ages features headline set-piece moments — including sequences that put you in control of an Atlan mech, and segments that take you airborne on a cybernetic dragon. It’s a very different flavor of spectacle than the constant-speed pressure cooker of DOOM (2016) and Eternal, but it fits the “war story” framing.

About id Software

id Software remains one of the most influential FPS studios in the industry. The team became part of ZeniMax Media in 2009, and ZeniMax later joined Microsoft in 2021 — with Bethesda Softworks continuing as the publishing label for major releases like DOOM.
