Ghost Recon Wildlands: Last Rites Review – Returning to Bolivia After 700 Hours

Posted on August 10, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

After 700 hours in the full game, returning to Bolivia still feels special

Ghost Recon Wildlands: Last Rites brings me back to one of my favourite games of all time—and reminds me why this is not a game you finish in one weekend and forget.

Reviewed on PC.Score: 9/10

Across the full game, I have spent more than 700 hours in Ghost Recon Wildlands over the years. Last Rites is only the newest reason I returned. I had waited what felt like forever to play it again and to have a real reason to return to Bolivia. Now that I have played the new content, my verdict is simple: this game is still too good. Way too good.

New content will always help bring players back, but Last Rites is more than an excuse to reinstall the game. It is genuinely good, it gave me the challenge I wanted, and it immediately reminded me why Wildlands remains so easy to recommend.

A game measured in months, not hours

Ghost Recon Wildlands is not one of those games you finish during a four-to-eight-hour session and then move on from. It can stay with you for months, whether you play alone, with the AI squad, or with friends.

That freedom is a major reason I have accumulated more than 700 hours. Missions can be approached quietly, aggressively, carefully, or with a plan that collapses within seconds. The world keeps producing stories because the player is given room to create them.

Last Rites is more than an excuse to reinstall

A focused run through the new Last Rites story content can take around two hours. My complete Last Rites playthrough lasted just over three hours because I tend to explore, take detours, inspect every location, and check every corner. Players who approach it the same way could easily spend three to four hours or more.

I also found the new content satisfyingly challenging. It made me slow down, watch enemy positions, use the terrain, and think about how I wanted to approach each encounter. That is exactly what I want from Ghost Recon.

The moment before the shot still matters

Returning to Wildlands also brought to mind something Richard Dansky said in Fix Gaming Channel’s interview with Richard Dansky. Dansky provided narrative support for Wildlands and wrote the Dark Waters novel.

Dansky explained that “Ghost Recon has always been about the moment before the shot, rather than the shot itself.” He later said players had “won the battle before the first shot was fired.”

Dansky was speaking about Wildlands more broadly—not Last Rites specifically—but his words perfectly describe what I experienced upon returning. The preparation, freedom, and feeling of controlling the battlefield are still here.

Breakpoint was good, but Wildlands is fantastic

I enjoyed Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and it became a good game in its own right. But for me, Wildlands is still the stronger experience. Bolivia, the mission freedom, the tactical sandbox, and the way solo and cooperative play fit together give it something the sequel never completely replaced.

Returning after such a long wait only made that clearer. I do not need to search for a more complicated conclusion: this game is too good. Way too good.

Review verdict

Last Rites is a strong return to one of my favourite games ever made. It gives longtime players meaningful new content, preserves the freedom that makes Wildlands special, and provides a real reason to step back into Bolivia.

More importantly, returning for Last Rites shows just how well the foundations of Wildlands still hold up. Its open-world freedom, tactical options, cooperative play, and ability to make even familiar missions feel unpredictable remain difficult to replace.

For me, this is not simply nostalgia. I have hundreds of hours in the game, and I can still return years later, find something worth doing, and immediately remember why I spent so much time here in the first place.
