Battle train in a frozen wasteland from Heat Death: Survival Train.

Is Heat Death Survival Train the Best Demo at Steam Next Fest Review

Posted on June 14, 2024May 20, 2025 By Ronny Fiksdahl

A battle-train survival game that could be one of the coolest demos this year—literally.

Heat Death: Survival Train, developed and published by Mass Games Dev, is slated for release in 2024. This sci-fi survival title drops you into a frozen, post-apocalyptic world where the only hope for survival lies in your custom-built battle train. Acting as both home and fortress, the train lets you explore, scavenge, and fight across a harsh, icy wasteland. Based on my playthrough of the Steam Next Fest demo, here’s what stood out.

Heat Death: Survival Train

Release Date: 2024

Genre: Sci-Fi Survival, Strategy, Exploration

Developer/Publisher: Mass Games Dev/LightOnDevs

Platforms: PC (Steam)

Demo Impressions

The demo acts as a solid proof of concept. It introduces players to the cold, harsh world of Heat Death, where survival is not just about shooting enemies—it’s about adapting, upgrading, and maintaining momentum as your train chugs through extreme weather and danger zones.

Environmental Exploration

From frozen lakes to derelict tunnels, exploration is one of the more engaging aspects of the demo. Each stop presents an opportunity to scavenge resources and expand your survival capabilities. The terrain design creates both tension and curiosity.

Survival Systems

Managing hunger, heat, and health adds layers of strategy. The train is more than transport—it’s your lifeline. Upgrades like better insulation or more efficient heaters become vital for lasting longer in the brutal snowstorms.

Combat Mechanics

The threat of drone attacks introduces real-time defense and combat. While not yet deeply developed, the basic targeting and turret mechanics suggest this will be expanded in the full game.

Visuals & Audio

One of the standout elements of Heat Death is its presentation. Snow effects, ambient lighting, and environmental detail all contribute to an immersive post-apocalyptic vibe. The sound design—howling winds, echoing machines—seals the mood.

Pros & Cons

  • + Beautiful and immersive visual design
  • + Unique mobile-base gameplay concept
  • + Promising survival mechanics
  • – Combat still feels early-stage
  • – Demo is more of a teaser than a full showcase

Final Thoughts & Rating

Heat Death: Survival Train shows promise. Its strong visual identity and creative concept of a roaming survival train make it one of the more original games at this Steam Next Fest. However, it still feels like a foundation rather than a finished piece. If the final version delivers on this potential with deeper systems and refined combat, it could be a sleeper hit.

Steam Next Fest Standout?

Having tested 20+ demos during Steam Next Fest, Heat Death stands out. Whether it ends up being the best will depend on how much the developers evolve the systems introduced here. For now, it’s one to watch closely.
