A brutal Xbox reset puts thousands of gaming jobs at risk
Microsoft has confirmed a major Xbox restructure, with thousands of roles being cut as the company resets its gaming business.
Microsoft has announced another major round of cuts, with Xbox taking one of the heaviest hits inside the company.
The company says it is beginning the most significant restructure in Xbox history, with approximately 3,200 roles set to be reduced through fiscal year 2027. Around 1,600 role eliminations are happening immediately.

The 20% figure is reported, not the company wording
According to Business Insider, the planned reductions amount to roughly 20% of the Xbox workforce. That is why “reportedly cutting 20%” is the safer headline wording.
Reuters reports that Microsoft is cutting around 4,800 jobs overall, equal to about 2.1% of its global workforce, while overhauling its Xbox gaming business.
Another rough hit for the people behind games
The gaming industry keeps celebrating huge releases, major franchises, subscription services, and platform growth. But behind the scenes, workers continue to face cuts, closures, and uncertainty.
For Xbox, this is more than a small adjustment. It follows years of major spending, including the acquisitions of ZeniMax Media and Activision Blizzard, while the company continues to reshape its gaming strategy across console, PC, cloud, subscriptions, and multiplatform releases.
For the workers affected, the business language does not soften the reality. Behind every number are developers, QA testers, artists, writers, producers, engineers, community teams, support staff, and many others who helped build the games and platforms players use every day.
The industry is not short on talent, passion, or players. But when one of the biggest companies in the world is cutting thousands of roles from its gaming division, it is hard to ignore how unstable the business side of games has become.
